A friend of mine went to a VW yard not to long ago and sent me a couple of pics of a single cab. I decided I had to have it. Finally convinced my hubby into it and we set off to Pismo Beach to pick it up. This was about 2pm, so we didn't get there till dark. We bought it sight unseen, basically. Just had a couple of the pics my friend sent. By the time we got there the place was closed and it was dark. We had our friend pay for the truck and the place set it outside for us before they left. Here are a couple of first sight photos.
We only had flash lights so couldn't see much. We got to the first gas and could finally see what we got. WOW, it was a sight to see. LOL
Got it home and was able to take some pics during the daylight. The floor boards weren't to bad.
But let me tell you, it has a lot of rust in other areas. That's ok though, I'm up for the challenge.
Has a few dings and dents too.
Few more rust spots.
Few holes here and there.
Can see clear through it's middle.
So far I've only given it a bath and put my groups sticker on the windshield.
We had some paperwork issues and I actually finally got to got those figured out, so now I can start the process of fixing it up.
Someone put a 71 front end under it but didn't put the stuff to actually make the brakes actually work. So we are going to put a 70 front end back under it.
For now the plan is to fix the front end then put a motor in it and drive it. I figure I will drive it for the summer with all the holes, then this coming up winter I will start fixing the rust areas. I just ordered the funky green metal for the windshield area, so that will be the first thing to tackle. We also have a complete roof off of a different bay window, that we will rob the rain gutters off of, to fix the non existing ones on the truck.
It will be a rolling resto! Oh, and I named it "Samson, the mighty hauler"
Will update this thread as I go along.
(Tcash, you will be proud of me. I uploaded all the photos to the Samba. LOL I tell you it is a lot easier to do it with Photobucket though. ) _________________ Kim

Yay! Saving another single cab bay window! I consider them one of the rarer VWs due to the chicken tax quickly quashing their sales numbers here in the US. Add to that the fact that most were used as work vehicles causing them to lead a hard life, probably full of neglect. Here is mine:

Finally started on the truck today. I pulled the 71 front end out. The puppy had a final inspection.
We had a drum brake front end all ready to go back in, but when we got to looking at them side by side, we noticed the replacement one was different. It has a smaller bolt pattern. So needles to say, there went that idea. We got to looking at them and decided that we could probably just switch the spindles. So now we have 70 spindles on a 71 front end.
Kind of reminds me of a Johny Cash song. LOL
To bad we didn't notice the difference before I pulled the front end out. Could have just swapped the spindles while in the bus. LOL Oh well, guess it was a good learning experience. Never pulled a front end before.
Front end back in.
A friend of mine came over, and he helped me pull the tranny and axles. Tranny was in good shape. I was a bit worried because it appeared to be hanging pretty low, like someone pulled the motor with out supporting it. It's all good though.
I also took all the brakes off of the backing plates, and just need to clean them up and paint them.
My hubby has a nice sandblasting cabinet that he let his friend take to his place to use. ( it never worked to well with his smaller compresser, that is why he let his friend take it to his place) So I figured we would have to wait and go to that friends place to clean things up. Then he surprised me and we went to Harbor Frieght and we bought a new one. Now we have one that our compressor should be able to handle and we can do it right here at home.
So, if things go right, I should be able to sandblast and paint the backing plates and reinstall them tomorrow. Then just need to go buy new brakes and brake cylinders to put things back together on the front end. After that I can clean up the axles and get the tranny back in.
Some things to do after that will be, find tail lights and back up lights and put them in. Then figure out what motor we will be using and install that. Then I should be able to drive it for the summer. _________________ Kim

Got a little more done today.
After sandblasting the backing plates, I painted them.
Come on, anyone that has been following my Westy build, should know this one wasn't going to be boring old black. LOL
I also sandblasted the brake parts.
Since I don't have the parts to put the brakes back on the bus, I decided to take the bumper off.
See all the rust flakes? That's half of the bus. LOL Needs a little metal replacement.
On a side note, I just noticed by mistake, while posting this. There is a thing below the box for typing in that says' "Show my resent Gallery photos". Oh my gosh, posting pics in here just got so much easer!! Kudos to the person that put that in.
Anyway, slowly but surely things are coming along. _________________ Kim

sweet truck! love those things! It looks like a new nose will take care of a lot of your rust spots, if there is still good metal underneath. |

Cool rescue. You know you have a lot of work ahead, so go and replace all the brake lines. I really bet they need it seeing that body rust. Cool running! _________________ '72 Elm Green Deluxe |
