|
|
I was wondering if someone can help me with contact info to any vintage parts suppliers outside of US that would stock or reproduce RHD parts for my 57 Oval. I'm having no luck with the RHD stuff from the usual vintage suppliers around California.
I Just need small stuff like original/repro rubber floor mats, trunk liner and wiring cover.
Thanks for any help.

RHD floor mats are like hen's teeth. Good luck. As far as the trunk liner you can try Koch's. They had one made for my '54 and it turned out great. _________________ 1954 RHD Aussie Oval |

In terms of the mats and firewall piece, everyone sit tight
Send me your contact info and I'll start keeping a list. I've been working on making them. Believe me, nobody wants to try this on their own _________________ Even my nuts are plated.....

Hi,
I am interested. I have a 1954 Oval, am located in Australia.
Let me know how far along you are, or if and when you are looking at producing reproductions.
Cheers

Hi,
Actually I am amazed that no one yet makes RHD floor mats. Virtually every colony or former colony of the British Empire (formerly known as the leader of the world) drives on the right (except for us rebels here in North America) Plus some other countries because, well just because they do that's all.
We are talking MILLIONS of beetles running around. I see WTB ads all the time not only here in the USA but on Australian and British VW sites.
Keep in mind, that some of these ads are looking for colored mats as well as the standard black and grey.
Makes one wonder what they did back in the 40's and very early 50's before VW produced RHD cars, or when people brought them in as LHD from other neighboring countries, when shops in England specialized in converting LHD to RHD. Did they just modify the original mat? put carpet in instead?
I know they often repainted and reupholstered (most often with leather) the car as well to bring it up to the "proper" British standards of the day.
What year did VW recognize a market and finally produce the RHD ?

I have an OG set from a '53 RHD. Not mint, but could be used.
I also have a few 58/59 only sets (grey mats). |

VW set up a plant in Ireland making CKD RHD cars from 1950 (Split Window). Relatively small numbers were made. A plant was also set up in South Africa in 1951 making RHD Splits.
Official RHD German production started in Mid-1953. |

Mr Oakley... do you know much about Irish built cars? I now have a '53 RHD CKD job... need lots of love... any idea on numbers built? any special features (other than glass?)
Cheers

Update - molds are made for the front mats, I am waiting on an NOS firewall mat that will be arriving in a month or so. Everyone sit tight, I will be contacting you individually when they are ready.
For everyones' information I will only be doing black on this first run. Sorry, but in the mat manufacturing world this will be a very short run.
Thanks, and spread the word. The more I can make, the lower the price for all of us..... _________________ Even my nuts are plated.....

Do the RHD cars have the hood support on the left or the right side? How about the interior light? |

Hi SNORT, I have an all original low millage Australian CKD RHD Oval. My hood support and interior light are on the left hand side of the vehicle or passanger side (looking from the rear of the car). I don't think theres any difference on those items as compared to LHD cars.
The most notible differences on RHD cars compared to LHD cars are obviously the steering column and pedal assembly being on the RH side, the mirror and visor assembly and the dash is a mirror image of the LHD cars. Oh, I can't forget the floor mats, trunk liner and wire cover.

Thanks djkeev you are correct in noting those other items. My oversight. However, the headlamp glass/assembly is the symmetrical fluted European style non-sealed beam which would be correct for RHD and LHD European cars. Not RHD specific like the other items mentioned.
