I've never seen pre-clearanced cams sold, but why not get the machine shop that's doing your case do the cam?

SLR sells SC1 preclearanced cams, I believe the SC1 is a Scat manufactured blank. They DO exist...

XV280 on 106 l/c, note flats in between lobes...

XR324, again note flats, this is an older blank which seems to have a smoother finish...

Engle themselves will clearance the cam for a price, contact them directly and see what they can/will do.

Short of that, have a reputable machine shop do it for you.

Or get out the die grinder and do it yourself..... I did with an FK-8 for my 2110. Just use alot of masking tape on the bearing surfaces. The center bearing is the trickey one. Make sure your tool rotation is opposite of the bearings surface so if it digs in it will not want to ride over on to that surface. I thought it was actually rather fun.

Some clearance cams by turning them in a lathe.
OK for smaller strokes but bigger strokes take off too much material in my opinion.
Notching cams like some in the pictures shown is the preferred method.
Just take a little more time to get the notches indexed ccorrectly.
As mentioned, Engle and others vendors will notch camshafts.

I use a Bridgeport and an old dead case-half that I modified so I can clamp the cam in without damaging anything. I clearance it using a 4 flute endmill, take about 30 min.

what is the safe limit when clearancing the cam on a lathe? I need to clearance my FK8 to use with 82mm crank, VW journals. Clearancing on a lathe seems comfortable. Thanks.

What rod?
H-beams have a smaller cap than I-beams and need less of course.
Valve springs and over the nose pressures figure into that number too..........somehow........ Laughing

Clearancing on the lathe takes off material all the way around the diameter,
which makes the cam weaker than if it were clearanced on a mill.

Or clearenced with a die grinder.... I will never use a scat lifter in my motor after comparing them to CB lifters under the microscope. Regardless of who is pushing them. All the big builders say that we the home builders are doing something wrong yet I never seen them spill their secrets as to what they do right..... Do a search on CB lightweights VS Scats and see what comes up... For a motor that is $ 3-7k why risk it.

I'm installed a Demello 82 mm crank and Rimco Super rods today the cam clearancing was minimal and took about 10 minutes with a grinder.
