|
|
Because it is cracked and pretty crappy looking, I am looking to replace, remove, or modify my current dashboard ashtray. Therefore, I am looking for some ideas/ advice.
1) does anyone know where i can get a replacement ashtray? I looked into the usual suspects (gowesty, van cafe, bus depot) and didn't seem to find one.
2) does anyone know of a vendor who might sell something interesting that would fit into the stock ashtray hole. I'm thinking a dashboard tray of some sort? I saw one at gowesty, but it looked a little chintzy.
3) can anyone suggest or link me to any interesting mods that could be done with this space- I have read about the i-pod mod, but not sure if i want to use the space it that way, so i am looking for other ideas.
thanks for your help!

How about Behr front A/C? I have a brown ash tray if you want it.

If you (or your front passenger) don't smoke, why use it as an ashtray?
Mod it to be a "catch-all cum cupholder" for the drinks and junk that accumulates everywhere else.
Others have done amazing mods, but here is one more. Check outwww.griffco.ca/interest and look for the Westfalia link. _________________ '88 VW Westfalia

You want the super-nifty dashboard tray and cup holder that someone on the Samba sells (can't remember the name -- check the classifieds). It anchors in the hole that the ashtray came out of and it's totally essential!
Cheers,

Fairweather is the guy who was building them. Looks like his vanagonaccessories site is no longer up - try sending him a PM if you're interested. _________________ '85 Westy |

I am not a smoker and have no need for the ashtray- i mostly use it for gas receipts and change. I just want to do something with it because it is a bit of an eyesore- I figures there have to be a ton of examples for creative uses for the space.
Thanks for the suggestions- keep them coming! _________________ '87 Westy Vanagon GL- "Ruby"- Titian Red

This is exactly what I am looking for. Is anybody else here making anything like this? |

Hefty Smurf threatened to break into the very exciting cupholder market but I haven't seen anything yet
I can make you one for 75$ which includes shipping to the L48.

I have had one of these and can attest to the fine quality of these dashboard organizers. _________________ 89 Bostig powered syncro westy |

How bout a hot plate to cook bacon on the run?! You can never have enough bacon!
Watchout for those sharp curves, hot grease...
Did you see dogpilots mount for the i-pad? Very nice. I have a pda mount for my phone/pda with bluetooth to stereo. It has a 5 inch screen so that is nice. The mount bolts to the holes for the mono speaker, no drilling required. As you can see I run the cable though the ashtray with a rubber grommet.

We usually pop a CB in ours. The hole is just right for a midland CB to fit right in Great for when your in convoy or if you off road.

Hey Presslab,
Nice job on the Behr vent! I have one waiting to be installed and was dreading moving the sterio. I was thinking about popping in end vents from a bay window dash, but your solution looks good. Would you share the list of bits you used to make it?
Thanks,

I did this as a cheap replacement - one of my first 'mods'. It's worked very well the past couple years, no complaints!

There is also a two gauge pod that fits over that spot. I think T3 sells them. Great for oil pressure plus volts or oil temp.

Wanted to install an outside temp gauge somewhere, yet be somewhat discrete about it:
