AWESOME! Finally a serious reason to finish my TWELVE YEAR restoration on my 181! (now a 481)
Hiawassee is only 30 minutes across the mountain from my shop.. Some awesome roads here for cruises.. I'd be willing to open the doors for some tours if the organizers plan on crossing the mountain..
I'll gladly sponsor the event as well, if someone wants to contact me. _________________ Jake Raby

Hi guys, I will definately be there. It will be a longer trek from Indiana but will be worth it. This gives me motivation to finish my car this Spring. Right now the body is off getting paint at a buddies garage. The chassis is 95% complete and anxiously awaiting rejoining the body. The engine is ready to install.
I created an event for Kubel Treffen on Facebook. Check it out at:

Take care,

Yeah, this show seems to get farther and farther away from the folks up here in the Northeast as well. Bummer. _________________

I have to agree with Fun 181.
You guys keep holding these events farther and farther away from Detroit!
I must admit, it was for the most part, a very pleasant drive down to and home from Bardstown KY last year. On two occasions I had to put my top up due to rain; a minor PITA as a one man job.
The opportunity to visit Jake's shop, home of my Thing's engine, makes the trip very tempting.
Thingcrazy- I'll accept your promise of warm weather; how about a promise of dry weather?
Best regards to all, Mondshine

Four hours of mountain driving and some decent camping.. Very, very tempting.
What does the Sunday schedule look like? I'd need to be home by a reasonably time that night to prepare for another trip on the 11th. |

Thanks for the responses and we truly appreciated. A lot of input and asking Thing attendees goes into this annual event. Everyone agreed that they would want to see the event moving locations every 2 to 3 years. That way it would change location site to different parts of geography. There is no preferred area of north verses south nor east or west. With that we also need local support in that area to help in organizing the local area events. Thankfully we had a couple that volunteered and stepped up to do that for the Georgia event. Plans are to continue to rotate locations every 2 to 3 years to where we have local volunteers to assist and support the event.
Sunday- Driving scenic tour through beautiful north Georgia
Start early in the morning around 7:30 and try to be back at motel around noon for folks to have time to start their journey home.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone in July! |

I just got a e-mail from the THING shop about the show!
I have not been on the site for a few weeks, it's about ten hours from Rockville Maryland it may be time to get that hitch installed on the daily driver for a tow.
How steep are those Georgia mountains????
I dont want to fry my old engine 500 miles from home! _________________ 73 Thing

2,000 ft above sea level tops. I can't comment on the grade, but there's nothing you shouldn't be able to handle. A support vehicle never hurts though. |

There's a nice feature on Google Earth. Select your start point and destination point, then get directions. Right click on the Route box (last box after all the turn directions) and select "Show Elevation Profile". Great planning tool.

Hopefully they ain't as steep as the ones going from VA thru west VA into Kentucky, those were about the steepest mountains I never thought I'd get over. we made it, about 20mph a mountain at a time with my Inline 6 F150 and a trailer and THING. I think I'm driving (the Thing) or doing a Tow bar this time.
