3 original red '60 dipsticks with special oil marks on left. Normal 36hp dipstick on right.
2 extras I have

Other than the color and the fill mark, is there a difference? _________________

2 details seem like enough for a dipstick, not much there. I do not see another difference. _________________ ---

Headliner's back window area, and the two folds Golde ragtop. Sorry for the poor quality picture...

I have one of the red dipsticks on my 60. I have restored the car to show room condition. The engine sheet metal is getting powder coated this week but I am wondering if I should get the dip stick painted or leave it alone. Would it just look like some one painted a regular dipstick or should it be left original? _________________ John

The most important difference between 59 and 60 dipstick is the oil level! 44mm in 59, then 40mm for the 60 model. _________________ Il est grand le mystère de la DR |

There used to be a guy that would reproduce them, but he disappeared maybe a year ago.
The question of legality always crops up when it comes to constructive VIN-badging. That said, OR DMV did not look at my front badge, they wanted to see the chassis vin.
If you really want one, you may have to look for a junker 61 to pull one off of. _________________ Plate of shrimp |

|

Hey guys its 61 Steve.
I'm wanting to put together a early matching 40 horse for my Jan. 61. It was the first year of the 40 horse so I would love to have a perfect 40 for her. So looking for all the specs of my engine.
Here is what I think I know so far...
Did the engine come with heater tubes?
I believe the oil bath did not have to tube on the right side?
The carb was a 28pict-1? part number?
What is the og dizzy part number and also part numbers for the points and cap?
Coil will it be black 6v? specific part number?
Genny was the 6v with reg on top? Does this have a specific part number for a 61?
Breast plate was it a one year only what did it look like?
Any other tin that was rare on the engine?
Thinking that about covers it. |

Here are some answers to your questions. Most of these parts aren't terribly hard to find - many are currently in the classifieds. Nice to hear another 61 is going stock. Good luck!

Did the engine come with heater tubes? No, stale air 40hp
I believe the oil bath did not have to tube on the right side? Correct
The carb was a 28pict-1? part number? No, it was just 28 PICT (not a -1) - don't have the part number at my fingertips. Check out this description from Ed Fall's website: http://www.vintagewerks.com/Carbs/carb_sale.html#28PICT
What is the og dizzy part number and also part numbers for the points and cap? Believe it had a Bosch ZV/PAU 4R2, 006 points, 006 condenser, 010 rotor, 037 cap. Here's one for sale (not me): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1241194
Coil will it be black 6v? specific part number? Not sure on part number, but it was black and 6v
Genny was the 6v with reg on top? Does this have a specific part number for a 61? Generator is thin slot, 6v, with regulator on top. Check out the charts in this post to get the exact number http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=583815
Breast plate was it a one year only what did it look like? Not one year only - 61-63 stale air 40hp w/out fresh air hose holes to be used with a 40hp stale air muffler. See picture below.
Any other tin that was rare on the engine? Fan shroud similar to late 36hp with rectangular indentation at top to allow air cleaner proper clearance, and 2 holes near base, 1 on each side (L&R) for spark plug wire holders. Here's an ad for one (not mine):
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1396066
Front tin has large hole on left side for preheat hose that connects air cleaner to heater box. Another ad for example (not mine):
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1330409
Also needs 40hp stale air heater boxes with the oval hole (36hp was round) where the exchanger meets the shoe box. Left side will have an inlet pipe for preheat hose. Another classified example (not mine):
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1465481
Will also need a 113 129 701A manifold to fit the early round boss 40hp heads with smaller intake openings.
Thinking that about covers it. |

Thanks man this helps get the ball rolling! Now I have a fresh rebuilt 40 with the engine numbers rubbed off the case. Should I worry or just build it? |

I got from your first post that you were interested in an original engine for your early 61. All you'd have to do at this point with the fresh air 40 is remove the fresh air tins, heater boxes & exhaust and replace them with the stale air units, use the 4R2 fat cap distributor and 28 PICT carb and you'd have a proper early stale air 40hp. Sell off the fresh air tins and other items and you'll be close to cost neutral on the conversion. The heads and manifold may be later units depending on what was used in the rebuild, but the overall appearance would be correct. _________________ 1950 Pearl Grey Hoffman Standard Split Window

What is the og fuel pump maybe a part number? and where can I find a NOS or new one?
Now the intake manifold was a grey color what is that color and where can I
find it?
Now for the og hardware is Kamax still available? if not what would be the next best thing? |

According to the May 1960 parts book in the Technical section, the fuel pump was 111 127 025 b
