A few weeks ago we went to Wyoming for a friends wedding. Her dad is a big car buff and drove me around some middle of nowhere areas of Wyoming to show me this little gem. It was so far back in a field that I could barely tell that it was even a bus. The gate was locked and nobody to be found. A few days later, we were on our way back home and we just so happen to be driving by where the bus sat. I slowed down to notice that the gate was still closed. Damn, I thought as I started to drive away. As we drove off, my wife said, "wait, there's someone there." We talked to the owner, struck a deal and drug it to my friends place where it curently sits.

Its a 61 Kombi. OG dove blue with an old over paint of white on the top half. Pretty much all there including front and back seat. Its only missing a few parts like driver door handle and some mirrors. I couldn't believe how dry it was. No rust in the rockers, battery tray is dry, cargo floors are great with just a couple small holes in the driver floor. The roof looks the worst though its only surface rust with no cancer. I about shit my pants when I opened the decklid to find the original 36 horse motor with a gas heater off to the left. Its pretty straight with the exception of some nose damage.

My intention is to make it my new camper. Leave it stock with some bigger tires. Remove the white over spray and leave it OG paint. I may repaint the nose and roof. I already have a full length roof rack lined up for it as well.

For now the bus will have to sit safely a few hundred miles away with only a few pics to stare at.

I love that bus...just saw a pic earlier in the dove blue patina thread and wondered whose it was. Good luck with it - please update the thread as time/progress allows.

Are you going to source an original period interior or build a camper interior yourself? Very nice bus, good luck with it and sorry to hear about your situation.

Very cool, I love the look of it even with the White paint.

If it's a '61 it would have had a 40hp engine though...
Maybe check the engine # against the VIN # charts on the site.

very cool bus! I agree, the white looks cool with the patina there. I'd buff the whole thing and see how it looks before stripping the white.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I do like how the white is worn throgh as if it were original. It may stay. I'll see what it looks like after its buffed out.

I got a z bed that will go in it. Thats it for camper stuff. Probably go with some plain grey panels like in the front.

The rust waterfall on the DS window is awesome! I'll trade you a new slider for that one, untouched Wink

Hmm? So it may not be the original motor. When was the change over from 36hp to 40hp?

May, 1959. It was the "bastard 40hp" which actually still had 36hp but looks like a 40hp - no integrated generator stand, etc.

My friend sent a couple more pics of the bus and I've got a few questions. The vin is 609xxx manufacured on 5/13/60 so I'm assuming that it is an early 61.

Did the early 61's not have humpback seats? This is what I'm working with. And yes I know that the one on the right is the rear bottom.

Can anyone identify this gas heater in these horrible pics? Stewart Warner? Whatever it is it sure is one fugly ass contraption.

May 13 is still the 1960 model year but early 61s did not have a hump seat.
Either way, your Bus should have the 58-early 61 non-hump front seat.

Yes, the gas heater looks like a Stewart-Warner to me.
