I'm building a set of dolly jacks to roll my buses around without a front beam.
I really liked Swervyjoe's setup shown here:

So, I looked to get a similar trailer jack pair to fab my own.
Picked up a pair from our favorite Chinese supplier:

They were $27 each, relatively cheap.
So, I figured I could just make up a mounting plate rather than welding like Swervyjoe did.

Logged onto emachineshop.com and with a little help from jeremyrockjock's front beam measurements, drew up a design. Then printed it out full size and checked if it was lined up OK, and if the crank handle would clear the wheel well.

Emachineshop.com is really cool, I submitted my plan, and it instantly gives a firm price quote, takes your credit card, and viola', four days later I pick up a box:

and inside:

1/4" aluminium, which I figured would be strong enough when combined with the mounting bars which come with the trailer jack. I'm running the mounting bars on one side from the top beam bolt, added a hole in the middle of the plate, and joined the other mounting bar on the other side from the top jack plate bolt.

The lowered height of the jacks is 19" off the floor for the lower beam bolt, which is about 1" higher than a stock height bus. I should be able to raise the bus up to 30" off the floor, high enough to get some real work done under there.

I'll be mounting them up later this week, I'll let you know how she works.

I plan to use these instead of jackstands.
Should I be concerned?

Personally, that set up gives me a bit of concern. I work in the marine industry and have lots of experience with those things. When they decide to buckle, they do so quickly. Plus, yours don't look nearly as beefy as the ones used by the other member. I would use them to CAREFULLY move my bus around in the shop, but never without adequate jack stands would I get under it.

Be safe! Cool ass idea though.

Since the bus will be without front and rear suspension, I'm guessing it will weigh about 2000 pounds. That's about 500 pounds for each of the four dolly wheels. The trailer jacks are rated for 1000 pounds.

But I hear you. I'll be careful.

If it's just the shell, it will weigh less than 2000 pounds.

I was just estimating.
The tech specs are for a Kombi to weigh 2400 lbs.
I was being conservative and estimating 400 lbs. for front beam, rear tranny, engine, etc.

Its good to estimate high for stuff like this.

I just scrapped a front beam minus brakes and spindles, and it was 94 pounds. A complete engine is around 240 pounds, give or take a few. Tranny is around 200 pounds with RGB's. Just FYI.

I too, have worked in the marine industry and have seen those tongue jacks buckle, but usually after some heavy use and abuse by undiscerning owners and mechanics. I think you'll be fine using them to roll around and adjust height for working on the bus, but I would use jack stands before I spent much time under them.

Like your idea but I would rather weld up the "tube" to the plate WITHOUT the rotary part!!! That's the "weak" point of it and you really don't need it for the intended use! Think

There are two available holes which can bolt the swivel part to the mounting plate. Already planned to do this. You can see the four inner holes here, two which engage the quick release, and two available for more permanent bolting togetherness. If I get the time, I may remove the quick release pins and put four bolts in.

Sounds right, that's the approach I'll take.

Thanks for the heads up about http://www.emachineshop.com/ . That is a pretty awesome site. Check out the videos. It looks easy for simple parts.

They were $42 each plus shipping.
Their price for machining steel is much higher than aluminum.
Probably because aluminum uses a computerized router instead of a true cnc milling machine.

I have also buckled a couple of those while attached to car trailers. The higher you go the easier they buckle, fully lowered or just up a bit shouldnt be an issue but I wouldnt use them at full lift.

OK,
Went up to Rusthaven to mount the new dolly jacks on the sunroof swivelseat. They fit up very nicely, only had to file two holes to get the bolts into the mount points. I removed the spring folding assembly and put four bolts around the swivel assembly to firm it up.

Here's the results, and yes, the crank handle clears the wheel wells:
