|
|
I have gone through three steering boxes in the Thingster. Maybe it is the 235x75 15 tyres on the front combined with off-roading, but I had a chat with Ronnie of OldVolks in Lake Havasu City, AZ. He showed me a Porsche 356 steering box, that is meant to be much stronger and fit with no mods., I have not heard of this before, anyone out there got a Porsche steering box in their Thing? I am told they are $400 used but that is cheap if it lasts! _________________ 63 singlecab

Does a rack fit with no mods like a Porsche box would? _________________ 63 singlecab

I really don't have any idea. I just know R&P steering would be better for your application. Better response, less things to go wrong. Guessing it would require some welding so it would most likely be part of full front beam rebuild. Might be something worth exploring. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

If you go to a rack setup, stay away from the cheap chinese junk like the empi ones. Buy a Saco rack, american made and much better quality. Not to mention you lose steering radius with the chinese racks and they are sloppy.
Another option is the early (mid 50s) type 1 steering box, it has a larger main shaft and is all around stronger. The trouble is finding one in good shape. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.

Wouldn't a rack and pinion require modification to the gas tank? |
