Just a slight update to my thread...
Within the first month my engine overheated and quit running, so I had to replace it. I am not sure what happened, but I found a jet from the carb sitting on the engine tin so that likely had something to do with it. I took the top end off the overheated engine (everything checked out fine) and put it all on a rebuilt 1300 bottom end. The engine runs perfect now.
Here is my bus next to my friend Adam's. Mine looks like a monster tuck parked next to his...
Also notice something missing from my bus...
Some bastards stole my front tag while I was parked at work one day. I have a replacement already but I haven't put it on yet
Everything was good until a few weeks ago my transmission went out. I knew it would happen sooner or later because it popped out of gear in fourth and made a lot of noises, I was driving home one day on the interstate and it lost all power all of a sudden. I shifted into neutral and pulled over to the side of the road and the engine started running properly again. So I pulled back into the road when the traffic had cleared and when I got back into fourth the bus started lurching and jumping...So I dropped down into third and it did the same thing again pretty quickly. So I shifted to second, and when it did it then I stopped and called a tow truck.
Here it is parked waiting for the tow truck...
I have another transmission I am putting into it, but I haven't pulled the old one yet. Hopefully here in a couple weeks I can be driving it again. _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

It is a delight to see a Splti bus salvaged and brought back to life. I really admire your great work, buddy! Congrats and enjoy the bus, as we all should be doing.
Thanks,

Thanks! I still have a lot of work ahead of me, but simply being able to drive the bus has been a huge motivation to keep working on it.
Here is some work I didn't post before. When I had the engine pulled out to replace it when it overheated, I decided to redo the bottom of the wheel wells where they meet the cab floor. A vast improvement over the patches I made...
I still need to go back and finish welding all this completely though... _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

Happy I just found this thread. I'm also resurrecting a '67 13 window, seablue Deluxe. I never started an "overall" thread, but I did do one on front floor replacement. That job SUCKED! _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

I can agree with the tough job of a floor replacement in a split. My 67 Sc was shot on the drivers side I purchased some 18 gauge stock and made a template, cut welded bent cussed and I have a bitchin hand fabbed drivers floor section. The time and sweat put into my Sc has really bonded me to this vehicle. _________________ 71 westfalia

Awesome thread and awesome bus!!!
Glad to see pics of this bus moving under its own power
Too many times you hear stories here on the samba with people having grand plans for their bus, only to not be able to finish them... You did a great job getting this bus back on the road. Congrats! |

Just to bring my thread up to date, I decided to go ahead and rebuild the reduction boxes that were on the good transmission I got to replace my blown one. I got my old trans out and pulled a reduction box cover and the bearings sounded bad and had a lot of slack in them...So I ordered all new bearings and will be rebuilding a set of reduction boxes in the next week or so... _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe

Besides the popping out of fourth problem, it's possible all you have is a stripped spline in one of your drums. |

Yeah, but I will need to post some pics. I should mention first that the used gearbox I got from my friend was bad. I think now it was likely a blown spider gear, but I will find out soon. It went out backing down the driveway after I had just rebuilt the redux boxes
I have been searching for a known good transaxle but finally gave up and decided to order a rebuilt one from Rancho. It should be here in about a month
Since the other trans went out I have just been doing odd jobs I have been putting off since the bus was put back on the road. Got a lot of progress on the interior, got my center pin replaced, replaced the entire top of my rear hatch due to rust issues, put new rubber seals in the back windows and hatch glass, switched the cover and padding from my rotten driver's seat bottom to a better one. I'll post some pics in a day or two... _________________ 1967 13 Window Deluxe
