For use with shore power, quite a few vanagonners use a small window unit hung from the luggage rack:

All this fits in a single tub - easy to grab & go or leave outside the van if not needed:

Some have intalled it into the driver's side slider window, also.

There is also a thread here about a member (southolive) installed a portable console unit inside the rear cabinet:

Could work for your EV...what do you like?

I've seen a portable window unit set on the front luggage rack area and directed into the front window of the poptop on a Vanagon Westy. Plenty of ideas out there.

There are 12v air conditioning systems designed for use in construction equipment useing Danfoss compressors, same compressors used in truckfridge and marine refiridgeration applications, if your looking for a non-grid tied option. Sorry I don't have links but its a developing field so google 12v air conditioning perhaps?

I copied the ideas of a few members here. This is a 5000 btu unit with remote control. Sets up in a minute or so. Comes down just as quickly. I made a peice from aluminum plate bolted to the underside, that fits on the top of the window sill. It has foam to protect the paint. The gutter attachments are also padded with some rubber. The hardest part was making the skirt. It uses magnets around the perimeter to the door and velcro to the AC unit. Sewn into it, is some reflectix insulation. To protect the condensor fins, I made the cover from a modified screen door dog protector from Lowes.

There is no free ride though. I would expect a 4 btu or 6 btu to draw quite a bit of power on a 12 volt system even with a modern compressor. Not saying it won't work, but I bet you'd need a pretty good battery bank and a way to recharge it underway.

The 5 btu unit does like shade. For Christmas we purchased Francher's pop top R8 insulation panels for both the Espar when cold and the AC when hot. Have not tried them with the AC yet. The canvas alone is not much of a barrier against hot or cold. I expect a decent improvement of cooling with the panels though.

I too bought the R8 from Jonce. I also bought the window covers that go on the OUTSIDE from him.

I had coverings on the inside but the heat still came through the glass, you need to try to stop it on the outside.

great idea thanks. I am not very handy and was wondering if you could give more details - more of a step by step so I can try to do it myself. Thanks much!

Here's the set up I manufactured first for myself & now for other Vanagon folks.

Problem is with the Eurovan--it has no drip moldings to hang the unit from, or not much of a luggage rack to bracket the AC unit down to the door window.

I saw this one on another forum. Don't know if they are available in the US though.

Looks a little expensive. Anyone in the UK try out one of these?

220 volts, plus about a grand plus by the time you got it here.

How would the power cord slip under a sliding window?

Good idea--more modifications and pretty expensive.

And considering the Vanagon Westfalia has neither a swing out window, nor the sill to support it--I think this may be bit of a problem.

Nice concept-- at a $1000.00 plus, plus , plus.

I just purchased a VW Camper van and I am not handy at all...I am looking for a step by step illustration for installing a portable air conditioner in the driver's window. I had some folks offer suggestions but I need more detailed step by step directions. Much appreciated!

Based on that description I would look seriously at buying one of the 'kits' offered since you will not need to make anything. Just follow their instructions to setup the unit with all the supplied gear. YMMV.

TK, Will your setup work on the OP's 2000 Eurovan?

Might.

Problem is I don't have, or know of anyone around here that has a EuroVan Westfalia to use as a template for the luggage rack brackets to get it to hang in the window square.

It sure doesn't have any drip moundings to use to hang it from, so the luggage rack would be the way to make it fit out of the window.
