A few good discussions on the proper use and function of this somewhat rare and useful (but not critical...in relation to other cooling tins) part. They come up for sale from time to time, but no real replacement supply is available. They rust out or have been removed and lost.
These two threads have plenty of pictures and discuss the differences between the Bus and 412 heat shields, both in shape and part numbers.

It is discussed about making your own with the brackets but no one ever put up dimensions for future use. If you have the brackets from a rusty shield, you could weld or rivet up a homemade replacement. Before I replaced mine I traced it out with dimensions in the hope that one day I could join the ranks of those Samba greats who have made a Sticky!
Hope this helps.... Measurements from a Bus, Non '79 model
Easy to see the difference between good and bad.....
Tried to use the panorama function on my phone... pay no attention to the lines just dimensions
And the rough dimensions up close. Please let me know if any numbers arent clear enough
Up close shots of the brackets, but looking back on my dimensions I didn't measure how far they are from each ends or each other, but hope it helps someone fabricate them

Sorry to revive an old thread.
I am manufacturing one made out of stainless steel, with the above dimensions as mine has long been removed, but cannot find the dimensions of the brackets.
Could you please possibly post me these? I only can find the length and width of the bottom parts which weld to the shield but no height. (65*16 mm and 44*16 mm)
Would be greatly appreciated as in Malta (Europe) I am the one of the few person swho run a type 4 engine in a bus and all the other buses are 1600.
Thanks in advance. Stay Safe. |

Here is the second one
the bends on it are 45 deg.
the bends on the first bracket - top is 90 deg. and bottom is around 75 deg.
