Mark,
I'll get you some actual measurements from the Bus tonight, but I did find this picture in the gallery that shows how mine is sitting relative to the crossmember. If I recall that aluminum angle is 1"x2" or 1.5"x2.5" (need to measure to confirm), but you can see my 1" inlet/outlet tubes are tucked right up against the cross member (they were welded in pretty well on the tank centerline from memory). To shroud the radiator I just made some flat panels that slip in and sit on the inner lip of the frame, and then attach to the side the radiator on the flanges on the core. The fan motors at this elevation are right up against the underfloor/control tubes that runs underneath. Overall hang down to the lowest point is maybe ~3", tops. I'll confirm this afternoon.

Your set up looks a lot more sophisticated than mine. Very nice! I'm still trying to make my original donor rad work and so far, it's working fine since the mods. _________________ *******************************

I think I can get away with this muffler with an offset tube to drop it down. It gives me 2 inches clearance on the timing cover and it’s not the lowest point of the motor

It took a couple days and a couple trys to get the mounts right but I think it worked out pretty well
Been waiting on parts all week to try to get things done while I have this week off. still waiting on my 5/8" heater tubing that was supposed to be here last week, then this week. My muffler flange was supposed to be here a couple days ago, Radiator 1.5" tubing was shipped wrong, had to re-order......
its taken a couple days of crawling under the back end to get my angles and tubing cut and tacked for the radiator. I'll have to get a friend to tig that for me
slowly but surely we are moving forward

Went wandering the local pick and pull and found a pretty good candidate for the air box from a 98 4.0 Ranger. The hose is super snug on the throttle body, but the hose is the right length to go to the space on the driver side. It has a MAF sensor built in (mine doesn’t have that) I can change the hose barbs for 1/2” for the breathers. And I’ll add some rare earth magnets to keep it in place

Fomoco for the win, picked up new fittings for the breather hose connections, and added a hole on the lid for the sensor, a couple 3/4” rare earth magnets to keep it in place

You are doing an awesome job. It is obvious that you are one that really pays attention to detail.
Out of curiosity would you be willing to let us know how much you think this is going to cost when you have completed?

It’s just a pile of receipts at the moment, one day we’ll talley it up. The big stuff anyway, there is lots of small crap, like nuts and bolts that you just don’t keep track of _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Nice find! That looks a perfect fit including the hose length. _________________ *******************************

the first time I went to the pick and pull I was sure the box from the Dodge truck would work, but like so many of the new filter boxes the bottom was shaped to the fender and turned out it was too tall. and the tube from the TB was useless.
I found this wandering down a row of ford vans that have a tube shaped one with a cone filter that was sort of usable. I had a bunch of dimensions written down and seen the hose on the ranger and thought that might just work, it already has a 90 and about 2 feet long, but I wasn't sure if the box would fit. Pretty good buy for $30 and a little soap and elbow grease, it'll probably cost me more for a new filter element
there is also one from the Dodge avenger that looks like it would work too, doesn't come with the hose though.
I can spend way too much time wandering the junkyards looking for inspiration _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

You forgot one, the best oil pan in my experience is the one from SubiStuff as it is shorter and better designed than all the guys who cut them short and call it good .
Full disclosure, I make them and have done so for close on 20 years but they have been extensively tested and are the only design I have found to stop the aeration. I have sold 100's of them and never had an issue.
Just another option

I looked at them, but the $749 CDN price tag was the biggest hurdle
the Engine mount is the lowest point on my conversion right now, so extra low isn't a factor on mine _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

The Day finally came to turn the key
Nope didn’t fire
1 - wiring for the fans is not right, they start when I hook up the battery?
I wired them to negative trigger in the relay , I’ll have to check my wiring
2 - fuel leak on the pressure side of the pump, loose clamp, fixed that.
Cranked it with the coil unplugged until it quit gargling fuel. Plugged it back in and no fire.
Where do I start narrowing it down? _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

In regards to no spark (with no engine codes), check that there is no copper showing at your Crank/cam sensor connectors. Cover with tape temporarily if its showing.
After double checking that, make sure that your "Ignition" wire from the original Bus ignition wiring harness is actually powered while the key is in the start position - this (no start situation) is very common if tapping off of an accessory wire instead of a true ignition wire. This will also show no codes, as the computer doesn't know its trying to start.
If this isn't the issue, go through and unplug and replug every connector in the new harness as well as on the ECU. _________________ *******************************

if you recall they were taking no new business and didn't know when they would. So they were no help on my particular situation.
My harness was tested before it was shipped, and Travis sent videos to show how to hook everything up. I'm sure its something on my end, me being green with the Subaru motors.
but thanks for being no constructive help there bud _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

I'm only familiar with Jeffs harnesses so I cant speak about one that the guy copied...
That said you didn't leave the test connectors plugged in did you? Providing he even left them in. Like I said, have zero clue how he did your harness _________________

easy one was the fans, i was plugged into 87A N/C instead of 87 N/O
the harness : unplugged cleaned contacts, and plugged everything back in
checked the wires for any exposed copper
using the stock subaru battery, reads 12.5v.
Check engine light is off when cranking, gin light, and neutral light are on.
test switch is off
fuel pump is working
