I don't think he did it to "piss off the purists." He did it cause he wanted to and cause that is the German Folks style -- narrowed beams and shiny rims but keeping everything else stock. Notice that he put the correct tail lights on it since he bought it?
The narrowed beam and the rims could be swapped out in a couple hours anyway, so who cares?

AlanInMass54 Sat Sep 20, 2003 6:20 am

As silly as it sounds, I care. As someone who loves vintage VWs, I think it's unfortunate to take one as nice as that and make it look all stupid. Sure it's his car and he can mess it up however he wants, its just a shame some people have no respect for a historic car like that.

I don't think it looks stupid. If he has all the parts than he can just put it back to normal if he wants to sell it.

I could see you being pissed if he cut out the split pillar to make it an oval, but the GFK do not molest their cars. Quintin can take it back to stock in less than a weekend and it would be in much better condition than when he acquired it. The only shame is not being able to respect someone's style choice even if you don't agree with it. IMHO

Meanwhile, you harping on him while your BD continues to deteriorate. Rust never sleeps (and I'm not talking about nthe Neil Young album).

Quintin,

Alot of people will think your brains fell out when you started the modification. I feel what you have done is not a problem if it can be put back to stock. You will have a lot more fun driving your car and many more people will be exposed to a split because to can get it out and drive it on a regular basis. Have Fun and enjoy the Ride. :D

Let me clear this up for you old ladies that sit around and passing judgement. FIrst of all nothing that was original on this car was cut. The origilnal beam was replaced. The rear end was just turned. I find it funny that you so called "experts" cant look at this car and reallize that in less than a day this could be returned to stock and you would never have known he difference. I kinda have to laugh at your closed mindedness.

As for the color/colour being something rare. Come on Derwinkermiester Medium Brown (L70) is most definitely one of the more common colors for a split. And guess what... It was a respray from the late 70s anyway. The whole rear roof has been sectioned in at some point in life. The heater channels are later style(soon to be fixed and put back to original. And it has various othe problems that need to be fixed to be returned to Original, whick will be done. You must be kiding. Coming to us is the best thing that ever happed to this little car. It will be returned to its former glory with all the correct parts and the work will be done right. So an ALL ORIGINAL SPLIT?................. Hardly. And even if we had decilded to do this for and "all origial car", so what, if you want to say that they are "reserved" for for the vintage croud, then for fuck sakes go out and buy them all. We have been building VWs for 17 years. We are aloud to dream about a split also. Or is that criminal too? You should hear yourself you sould silly.

This is really one of the stupidest things Ive ever read on the samba:

"I've got to agree with that. Some people just shouldnt own a Split Bug, they dont appreciate a real car. Stick with pimping out the Suburban some more."

You must be joking right? Amazing. You dont know Quintin, me or anything about us. You have no idea how much respect we have for VW history. Ive spent 16 years learnig about vintage VW. I have nothing but respect for Vintage VW. But I have no respect for judgemental ass holes like you.

You know what. If you think we didnt know that some of you half witted morons would say this kind of moronic stuff you are crazy. We know you purist dont like that sort of thing. But do you know what the best part is? YOU DONT HAVE TO.

Heres some photos just for you Winkermeister. Since somehow you beleive that that look is for post 65 cars.

I dont understand doing stuff like that to such a nice complete Split! I guess it's to piss off the vintage purists? Seems kinda retarded and childish to me. Are we back in the second grade haha? I guess we are, so I hereby give you an atomic wedgie and say put that car back the right way and go buy a 74 Super Beetle to mess up! A stock Split is a beautiful thing, I hope I can find one someday.

You know what alan you speak of respect but you really are the one that has none. How about instead of bagging on someone for doing what they want, you go out and wokr on that rusty bucket barndoor. You want to have your opinion about the car. Thats one thing. Making coments about the person that owns it is the childish part. The only thing is see as second grade here is you comments. Grow up. LIVE AND LET LIVE.

Dont you think its alittle self centered to think that we actually sat around and thought of ways to piss people like you off... LOL. You cant be serious. You really must think that the world revolves around you.

jus'buggin Sat Sep 20, 2003 12:21 pm

I would give my opinion on this but it probally needs to be in the rant forum...Quintin, you have a beautiful car. Keep it that way. I think purest suck.
What has he done to the car that cant be changed back? Nothing!

Oh save it save it...keep it original :-({|=

Whatever people.

Nothing is sacred and everything can be improved.

NorCalNick Sat Sep 20, 2003 12:34 pm

i like it!

NorCalNick Sat Sep 20, 2003 12:35 pm

only question i have, where you going to put the HUGE german folk sticker?

OvalWindowBucket Sat Sep 20, 2003 12:52 pm

Quintin's split window is THE ILL SHIT! Recognize! Haha, its his car, and its his choice on what he does with it. Those Fuchs and Beam are dope, so are the Albert mirrors (I think thats what they're called at least).

Its not like he went and turned it into a choptop bug truck with a rolls royce front end.

Peace,
Tyler

Im not quite cool enough to be in the club yet, i mean, i ONLY have an Oval :) I believe i goes like this? "If it aint split it aint shit!"

bljones Sat Sep 20, 2003 1:41 pm

I don't have a problem with it, and i don't see anything that can't be "undone" with a weekend worth of work. Nice job!

Hell, if you're handy with the tools you could enter the resto- custom class at one show on saturday, burn the midnight oil and enter the stock early class the next day and have a fighting chance of taking home trophies in both.

i have more respect for this than for someone creating another trailer queen that never sees the street.

53 0val Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:13 pm

Quintin,

Put some skirts on the split and then Trayle won't get all the attention.

AlanInMass54 Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:44 pm

Jesus some of you people are angry.. I'm sorry if I came off as an asshole, I'm actually not one (well somewhat). I just hate seeing a nice old split bug with goofy looking stuff bolted to it. (although those mirrors are very cool) You're right it can be easily changed back to normal. Years back, some guy a couple towns over found an oval dash split with almost no rust and it was reasonably intact. He proceeded to bastardize the shit out of it. Last I heard he was picked up on drug charges, but the car was a mess by the time he was done with it. So whenever I see a split with all that junk I'm reminded of that poor hacked one. But that You're right it can be easily changed back to normal. So I'm sorry if I offended anyone. And I'm sorry I have a differing opinion and for posting it in a public forum. I am a bad person. And yes my barndoor is a deteriorating piece of shit, I'm aware of that. Thankyou for the reminder Zamboni and "Trayle D" , for a moment I thought it was a decent vehicle. But you dont think there are people who do stuff just to 'piss off the purists' ? I see it all the time! I'm no purist either, (my bug isnt all stock neither will the bus be) but doing stuff just to bug them is kinda silly isnt it? :?: :?

volksnuts Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:55 pm

I can't believe how dumb some people can be....
Would you rather this car sit in some "vintage purists" backyard for 20 years while it rusts away, or cruising down Quintin's street. yeah maybe it's not what you would do, but then again you probably wouldn't have a split to begin with.
If he chopped the top, filled in the quarter windows, and put some trailer taillights into the decklid, then YEAH I would think that's screwing up the car...
Q... keep the sweet cars coming (I printed some pics of your 61 that I keep in my car to remind it what a sweet car looks like)

53 0val Sat Sep 20, 2003 2:58 pm

Hey Alan it's OK. You sort of remind me of an often used quote "A one-eyed man is KING in the land or the blind." You just have to open up your other eye once in a while. :D

Alan, Ive never met you. But this is what Ill think of if I ever do. Maybe you should think about that before you go running off at the mouth. Or if you want to be remembered by this sort of thing... Please continue. Ill be remembered as the guy who put a narrowed beam and early Fuch alloys on a sweet split. Im fine with that. Maybe you are too.

P.S
I built the beam and the wheels are borrowed from me because Quintins are at the chrome shop

justbuggin Sat Sep 20, 2003 3:17 pm

I'm embarking on my 57 rag project, & when it's finished in a few months, I'll post pics of it on here too. It won't have a stock engine (though I do have the OG lump & box), neither will it have stock paint/interior colours, & I don't think the original came with an adjustable beam either. And when fund are available, it won't be keeping the stock wheels for much longer either. (The rear screen would look cool with a GFK - UK Chapter logo in the back too! lol)
And you know what? I'll post my pics with pride, because I know I'll have turned a POS into a sweet looking ride. And I'll have done it myself, the way I want it, not how other think it should be.
Splits should not be treated as museum exhibits. Some seem to forget that if it were not for peoples desire to make their own version of the perfect car, then most of these old classics would either be dead/crushed & the few remaining ones salted away in private collections, gathering dust.

Bryan67 Sat Sep 20, 2003 4:24 pm

To hell with them. Now me personally, I would have dropped the front, put on some paint detailed Fuchs, a 2276 with IDA`s, and a Berg shifter.
"Anyone can restore a car but it takes a real man to cut one up".
Besides...what has been changed on it that cannot be changed back?

Trayle D. the real oggfk Sat Sep 20, 2003 4:33 pm

Funny bryan, that is what is next.

LOL...2275cc on IDAs, dry sump motor.
