Well I'm glad everything's straightened out. I wasnt aware the car had been spliced together, I did speak foolishly, and again I apologize. Volksnuts, what do you mean by this "maybe it's not what you would do, but then again you probably wouldn't have a split to begin with. " ? I'd love to have a split. Just every one I find that I could possibly afford is missing half its parts or is rotted to the gills or both. And from the looks of my bus I'll be working on it till I'm 70 anyways, because it's a piece of shit. That makes it good! :D

That car looks sweet. You know I really love to read shit like this. First of all, just like everyone said the car can be put back in no time. Second of all, even if the car was all fucked up and ruined, which it isn't, then the owners of all the other restored splits in the world should be happy. If a person owned a restored split and was worried about it's value then get a fuckin clue. They should pray every night that all other split owners in the world cut theirs up and ruin them that way they would be left with the only one in the world and it would be priceless. What's next, are they gonna run down to all the street rod events and tell those guys that their cars are fucked up. They're not stock either. Who gives a shit what other people do to their cars? You know what, starting now I want all convertible bug owners to weld tops on them or make really horrible, irreversibly hacked up Bajas so my car will be the only one on Earth. Go save a fuckin whale. |

Well, as I said I asked to be respected in what I say while I just did`nt think it`s right to do this to ANY Vintage VW..............it`s just my personal opinion and it was`nt meant to cause this much of a stir as it has.......... seems everyone here get`s in a hissy fit when anyone says something NEGATIVE about their CAL LOOK, RESTO CUSTOM or BAJA?
I meant NO disrespect to the owner at all, this was just an honest opinion held by me and a German collector.........
As for Purists...........
PURISTS don`t let a car sit in a backyard and RUST they MAINTAIN it and DRIVE it! (just to let you all know ok?)
I`ve driven anything from a 1944 Schwimwagen to a late 60`s cars , vintage Karmann Ghia`s and rare coachbuilts.
Owned 1946 thru 67 Beetle`s , driven (THOUSANDS OF KM`S IN EUROPE) and it`s a FAR better experience to DRIVE something that is THE REAL DEAL AND ALL ORIGINAL then something all CUSTOMIZED or well taken from ORIGINAL. (this is JUST my opinion)
If I`d KNOWN the car was a PATCH WORK quilt I would have accepted the fact that it was brought back from junk and spliced together...........that`s better than NOTHING is`nt it? This car was brought FIRST to my attention by a GERMAN collector WHO saw it and made a comment, and I agreed with him about it, and posted.
I just DON`T like to see an EARLY car all CAL LOOKED OUT or some CLUB STYLE custom I don`t go for this on a SPLIT WINDOW/OVAL OR EARLY SQUARE WINDOW car.
I mean I`m sure that PEOPLE will MOCK and BITCH about my ALL ORIGINAL 1960 Euro ragtop with it`s full VDO RALLYE gauges and all ORIGINAL German goodies and Vintage Porsche Rallye equipment, but as it`s all done in EARLY 1960`s parts it`s NOT a CAL LOOK or CLUB CUSTOM car but a vintage styled racing car, but to something to bitch about and well that`s anyone`s open opinion, this (still?) a FREE? country.
Everyone`s entitled to do with it as they like................ RIGHT it`s YOUR car, I just voiced my opinion, and well shook soooo many people up about it...............but it did ANSWER an IMPORTANT question for me though and I can see that NOT too many people here seem to RESPECT nice RESTORED or ALL ORIGINAL cars at all, while a PURIST collector like myself gets so much FLAK from people about an ANTI MOD opinion, I can see how things stand about good ORIGINAL cars, so next BAD CAMBERG meet in Germany, then keep your ASSES at home, we DON`T NEED YOU IN GERMANY TO COME TO ENJOY THE HUNDRED`S OF ALL ORIGINAL CARS OK? Does that sound fair?
Ohhh and Trayle if "BROWN" cars are so common then why is it that I know 2 German collectors LOOKING for 1950`s in that colour (for the PAST 8 months) and all they come up with are Green ones and Black ones????
Get real! all 1950`s ARE RARE NO MATTER WHAT COLOUR AND BROWN IS UNCOMMON ON EUROPEAN CARS BECAUSE THE COLOUR BROWN DIDN`T SELL WELL IN GERMANY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE COLOUR BROWN WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE NATIONAL SOCIALIST PARTY, NSDAP OR THE NAZI`S AND DIDN`T SELL WELL, so where are all THESE brown cars??????????
And if they are all over the PLACE then let me know where they are all are so that me and my PURIST friends can go and buy them up (PURISTS HAVE the $$$ to restore a car PROPERLY in the FIRST place and well it`s the ever increasing amount of customized and modified cars that HAVE driven THE PRICE of good ALL ORIGINAL cars WAY into the record books, and have made it even harder to find parts for cars while so much has been taken off, thrown away or sold etc.

Heres one for openers before I start resiting all the brown splits Ive seen for sale over the past 2 years.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/index.php?photo+200308020315095568 althoug I must admit this looks like L73 or L51(chestnut brown, or maybe even bordeaux red, now that would be a rare split color... But I guess being a callook/custom guy that makes early cars into abortions I shouldnt know that should I)
I could be wrong but this appears to be another.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/index.php?photo+200309111348031132
There was one for sale last year in Tucson Arizona. Same color.
There was one for sale right here on the samba in Sacramento last year. Same color.
The Blue one that is in the listing I made earlier of GFK cars on alloys was originaly that same color.
Quintins 50 is that same color.
And if you cantact Magnus in Sweden I almost positive he has another for sale.. Same color
Oh and there was another guy from Sweden a few months ago that had a 50 for sale that was the same color. How do I know you ask??? Becuase we were supposed to buy it but it was stolen from the docks.
The only other color I see for splits that is as common is L32 and L31 Azusa blue and Dove Blue.
Ohhh and Trayle if "BROWN" cars are so common then why is it that I know 2 German collectors LOOKING for 1950`s in that colour (for the PAST 8 months) and all they come up with are Green ones and Black ones????
Bro there were two for sale here on this very site in the last 6 months. One is what you see infront of you. And we payed 6k for it. Your "collector" freinds are slipping.
This is horse shit.
So Im I to believe that because of what Weve done to this car we arent welcome in Germany? Oh really, thats rich.
Nobody suggested that they/we dont like vintage cars. I for one love vintage cars. At VW classic I walk right through the custom cars to see the vintage cars. That is at the route of what I like. German steel and accessories are my passion. Quite the contrary, you are the one that doesnt like "anything" else. You see unlike you I have the capacity to enjoy both. I dont have the problem... You do.
by the way... dont insult my intelligence by trying to tell me that all the cars at Bad Camberge are "all original". You must really think I stupid.
these dont look all original to me.

Whatever.............sorry that my one friend doesn`t have a computer, and I really DON`T think they would buy a car here from the STATES unless it was an ALL ORIGINAL untouched car, were any of those cars all original 100% original cars?
I haven`t been here that long at all at the Samba to really notice many cars for sale, except what I was looking for , and well HONESTLY that`s WHY I`m going BACK to buy my rides in the OLD country.
I`m sure there`s MANY more like me that dislike the fact that early SPLITS/OVALS & SQUARE WINDOWS get used for custom cars, THE ORIGINAL RESTORATION VS CUSTOM scenario has been cause for fighting ever since SERIOUS VW collecting started in the 1980`s and I don`t think that the argument will ever end.........I`ll STICK TO MY ORIGINAL CARS! (That`s a nice PROBLEM)
If your intelligence was offended that`s too bad I never said that all the cars at BAD CAMBERG are original, it`s just DIFFERNET over there then here the custom look is VERY FROWNED UPON by the collectors I know who bring TOP cars there to the show...............TALK SHIT WHEN YOU CAN INVEST $18,000 IN A ROOF SECTION RESTORATION OK?

OK Im talking shit right now then. I can invest 18k into what ever I see fit. RIGH NOW!!! You are a little full of your self arent you. Matter of fact Im sure that I could do and 18k job for much less. Being that I do all my own work. And one of my best friends is one of the most respected body and paint guys on the west coast. But Im sure that means nothing to a purist like you. I mean Im just a lowly minimum wager to you Im sure. I mean you are the real grease that makes this hole hobby roll right along, arent you. |

I like what Quintin is doing to the '50. I have a '50 that I am going all custom with. Before anybody starts crying about that, mine is a POS that I am saving. Do what you want with it, it's your car. I bet that none of these people that are crying about your car have a dime invested in it, so their input means nothing.
Trayle,
I'll be in touch with you soon to build a narrowed beam for my '50 for that just right custom split look. |

It's just a freaking VW, there's thousands of splits out there, it's not the last one remaining. If so many people are crapping their pants because someone bolted on chrome rims and removed 4 bolts on the chassis to swap out for narrowed beams, they need to get a life. What's the fun if every car out there is stock.
Even if it's a drag raced midengined Hebmueller, slammed BRM's Rometsch, Fridolin pickup or a Kubelwagen/KDF Beetle pickup, it's their car and they can do anythig they want to do with it. If you don't like how their car is stand up and buy it from them and restore it the way you want it to see. But then again most of you probably don't like my current hot rod Oval project anyways or my Kubel Red baron project.
But after seeing some of the cars I just listed, getting mad at a split with a weekend's worth or reversible bolt on mods seems stupid, doesn't it? Have fun with your cars and remember, it's only a car! And no, I don't customize my cars out of spite to piss of purists. I don't care what strangers think about my projects. |
