Here is a bus with VIN fraud for sale. The seller sent me pics of the M-Code and VIN and they don't match. And there is no Double Door option on the M-Code plate that he claims is real. He said the door "might" be hacked in and the VIN in the engine compartment he thinks has been switched. He might want to disclose this in his ad.
That's not the only problem none of the doors fit right, the headliner looks like shit and aren't those bay window seats?
Not even worth half the starting bid IMO
Yeah, the headliner looks like a loaded diaper.
The "quality" of work on that bus is beyond atrocious. I have never seen a headliner/side liner installed so poorly--it doesn't even qualify as "amateur." Who puts padding behind the sidewall and door-window openings? What the hell is going on with the headliner behind the roof vent? And on, and on.
Looks to be a bay rear bumper as well, but what strikes me the most is the VIN/m-code mismatch. The m-plate has obviously been replaced due to its condition and type of screws. Is the bus really a 63? Well, it doesn't have ice pick front door handles that, I believe, was changed in the early 64 model year.
Seems to me, it would be relatively easy to tell if the engine compartment VIN was welded in and, personally, I believe the stamped VIN is original and the bus is a 66. Take a close look at the picture of the rear curved window. You can see a very amateur weld along the underside of the drip rail which may indicate an early rear corner was hacked onto a later bus.
This bus needs a very close inspection, and I agree that it doesn't appear to be worth starting bid.
Certainly, full disclosure is required regarding the VIN. He's opening himself up for trouble by selling on eBay with such a mismatch not being revealed.
Here's the shot of the drip rail above the corner window:
Update: This bus has been in two consecutive auction on ebay, one with a starting bid of $55K, and the other with a starting bid of $48K. Both auctions ended with no bids being offered.
Apparently the world-wide audience can recognize the lack of quality represented by that bus, even without disclosure of the VIN mismatch. |

No dogleg seam, rust in the front right jack point, banged up frame rails, diamond plate treasure chest floor, covered up gates, weird nose body work, etc. This thing looks like a wreck slapped together to make a quick buck.

The pink paint and the white walls offend me the most, lol |

I hardly think it was slapped together. treasure chest floor looks to be screwed/riveted to the top hats...not laid over an old floor. seen lots of trucks hiding dings etc on the gates like that one is. bottom of the truck better detailed than some of the "restorations" here.
guy probably got pissed at crappy fitting dog legs and went nuts with the welder...
obviously not up to samba standards but would make a cool cruiser for the right price.

These handles get passed as German NOS quite a bit. And this ad is a great example of the difference. Both are listed as German NOS, but only one, the one on the right is even close to being German. Look at the two. The one on the left is not German. Gold color mechanism, no key code stamp and a huge gap and the handle and collar. Buyer beware. |

The one on the right looks awful worn around the lock cylinder to be NOS

If I am shopping for a door handle I always appreciate seeing a photo of the markings on the inside of the handle, which can tell you a lot about what it is and where it came from. |

could be shelf wear, since it is on the highest part.
When buying a locking handle I like to see how worn the key slot is. Few ads actually show this.
Nice sharp edges with low wear are nice, but they can get really worn. Then they are sloppy and you can use different keys in the lock. Same with ignition switches. I had one bus with ignition switch where it was so worn the key would fall out when driving. |

Over 100 pictures on the PB site and not a single one of the bottom of the bus or previous to paint to prove the "zero rust"? Just the fact the bottom was rustproofed is scary to me, most of the time it's to hide rust, not prevent rust.
"Over 2 liter" engine?
Wow, really fishy. I hope the buyer is familiar with busses and checks it thoroughly. |

For a camper model, that thing sure is bling blingin'. It looks like it would be more at home at a tailgate party than a campsite. |

That bus belongs in Florida....near the beach. Once parked at the campsite, and you shut down the engine....you will hear the body filler release itself from the surrounding metal. |

besides the odd color choice this 'wolfsburg' bus has hanover front bumper, euro taillights on a US specs bus, bay window seats, wrong front seat cover, cheap ass interior panels, and i'm sure there more that don't make this thing worth the $30k+ price tag
