If you have a 65/earlier tranny, the serial numbers are on the chart on this page:

Oh, that's a VW part number, not a serial number. Serial numbers are stamped into the housing, not part of the casting like the number you are talking about is.
The serial number looks something like this:

What about newer ones? Is there a way? Mine is DC and 6 numbers. I am guessing 67 but don't know for sure. It is in a 63 but has a backup light switch, small (12V) starter bushing hole, and 5 lug wheels. The brake shoes are 58-64 though. |

That is 7 digits.
If it were less digits it would be a date code. |

Bringing this thread back for another ID question.
I bought what I was told was '67 Beetle tranny. It has no letters in the designator, just numbers. But, the number can't be located on the chart glutamodo posted. Can anyone help?
Casting #113 301 103D
Serial# 9984107

I have the following tranny numbers from my 2 VWs:
1959 Karmann Ghia:
vertical part
27
113 301 103
H
angled part
AB08023
1959 Bug:
vertical part
43
113 301 103
D
angled part
1200996
Tried using the previous link with no success to date either tranny or determine gear ratios.
Any ideas?
Best regards,

I just bought a swing axle trans from someone who took it out of their '66 beetle. The serial number is DC 0 307 959. Is this a type 3 swing axle that fits a '66 Beetle? |

Same with me, can't find any info on my trans, just purchased.
I know it's from a 1965, it's a 6 volt, but will these numbers tell me the gear ratios?
