I really enjoy Grand Prix, Le Mans, Gumball Rally... of course the Herbie films. What other racing movies am I missing from this era (60's -70's)? |

Does "Smokey and the Bandit" count?
;-)
Okay, how about The Racing Scene? "A 90 minute documentary released in 1970 that follows James Garners T-70 MK III coupes and his
Formula A race car during a couple major races in 1969."
Paul Newman in Winning: "Capturing the struggles and sacrifice of a race car driver focused on winning the Indianapolis 500."

There were an ass-load of cheesey race movies during that era. You should have no trouble finding them. |

"Winning" starring Paul Newman was shot in part at Road America in 1969.
This is also worth watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nOcXNZ9GDE
(I like it because I was there. :D ) |

While not truly "racing" movies, I like these films that either co-starred or featured a car almost as one of the title characters.
Bullitt - 1968 Mustang GT 390
Vanishing Point - 1970 Challenger R/T
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry - 1966 Impala, 1969 Charger
White Lightning - 1971 Ford LTD
The Road Warrior - 1973 Ford Falcon Coupe
The Blues Brothers - 1974 Monaco Police Package
Christine - 1958 Plymouth Fury
Cobra - 1950 Mercury
Death Race 2000 - Lots of weird kit cars |

How could you leave the "Family Truckster" off of that list? |

National Lampoon's Vacation - 1982 Wagonqueen Family Truckster
Only thing missing is "HONKY LIPS" in graffiti on the side. |

What about "Hot Rods to Hell" and there was another one that featured that Chrysler experimental turbine car where they were racing across the desert kinda like the Silver State Classic. I think Elvis made one or two racing movies, can't remember the names. Shit....I'm old. |

aha, sounds like there are some good ones... I did not live through the era so I cannot go by memory or experience. I was raised on crap like Days of Thunder or Driven. Pure swill. I talked to my dad about Grand Prix- he saw it in Cinemascope during its original release and was quite impressed.
Any more to add? |

Pick up the sound track from Grand Prix.
Put it a bit of Castrol "R" in a sauce pan on the low range burner while listening. The sounds. The smell. Nirvana. |

There was a great old 70's movie called "King of the Mountain". Basically a hippy in a tricked out Porsche Speedster racing jags and stuff on Mulholland Drive...kickin all their asses!
Great footage for its time. 8) |

"Redline 7000" from 1965. Vintage NASCAR (when it was real cars) and when the main characters arrive at their hotel...their rides include a Shelby Mustang.
"Two-lane Blacktop" from 1971. Very interesting film about a road race to Washington DC between a '55 Chevy and a GTO. |

I felt inspired so I just shelled out for the Porsche: Victory by Design DVD on Ebay.
If you like Pink Floyd, two of the members did a documentary type film called La Carrera Panamericana. They participated in the vintage race and scored it. |
