Yup, carbs got installed yesterday afternoon (took me a while due to the heat AND humidity), and the fuel system has been plumbed. Generator wires got installed too. I still have to mount the coil, and extend the wire to it (damn mice), along with putting on the plug wires, wiring up the VR, and adding some oil. Sue wants me to wait until she's here to hear it run, so I'll be waiting some on that. I still have a couple of minor things to do (like get some GAS), but it's close, real close. \:D/ Probably over the weekend it'll run. I still need to get some Dot 5 for it too, as I want it to stop, before it can go.

Bobnotch Fri Jul 22, 2011 7:17 pm

Ok, here's a current pic of the engine.

Today, I worked on my hit list. Plug wires, coil install, throttle cable hooked up, VR connections fixed, stuff like that.
I also worked on adding some brake fluid (Dot 5) today. Well naturally I had a leak at the rear Tee. Turned out I stripped it. I replaced the tee with 1 out of my stash, along with the entire brake line (didn't want it to happen again, as it's a prett tight spot). Naturally while re-running the brake line I had to pull the pedal cluster, and the clutch cable end came off the hook. Good thing I greased the other end, as it helped get it apart, so I could re-hook it. Got that done, and went back to filling the brake lines. Not much else done today, other than picking up some gas too.

I don't know who is more excited, you or me Bob! :D

I hear ya. It's been a long tough road to get to this point, and it's getting closer every day. 8)
The brake line and tee, messed me up a little, but then this project has been like that almost all the way thru. I also keep teasing Sue about washing all the dust off the inside stuff, as it's really filthy. It cleans up easy enough though. 8) The engine had a nice layer of dust on it, as did the front beam and frame head.

So will you make a vid of the engine fire up-running?

Well, Bob, being in no big rush, was letting the brake lines gravity bleed off and on over the last several days, when he had time. Said he just couldn't seem to get any fluid out of the left rear. So he finally decided to buy a new wheel cylinder ( a pair actually ) for it. Figured he might as well do both at the same time.

When I got home from work yesterday, my assignment was to go and pick them up, while he finished mowing the grass.

Today, when I got home from work, I got to play "pedal-pusher" while he bled the brakes a final time, to be sure there is no air in the system.

WOO! HOO!

One step closer to being able to fire up "Wolfie"!!! 8)

Of course, he still needs to take apart the drivers seat, to make it operational. So I was just sitting on a couple of cushions, during the "pedal-pushing" operation.

But still, progress is progress!

Yes, I really do need to get out there with a bucket of water and remove a layer of dust!

A special 'Thank You!' again to Jim Adney, for his time and labor, rebuilding "Wolfie's" master cylinder. Works lika a charm!. Sorry I neglected to mention this, when I posted yesterday. I'll blame it on the excitement of being nearly ready to fire up the engine! Thank You Jim!

Probably not. I'm sure our digicam has that function. But, with our slow-a** dial-up, it would take us like a week ( ok, ok, minor-very minor exaggeration ) to upload it to the worldwide web!

It's nearly impossible (maddeningly long waiting) to watch even the shortest assorted videos other folks post here.

Question for the 1500 Gurus:

We have a Bosch dist. rotor # 1 234 332 082.

Is it the correct part for the '64 "S" only distributor?

Bob looked in the parts book, but it only lists VW part #s.

gregson1 Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:38 pm

That one will work just fine.

New Bosch Part Number 04 006 is equivalent to the old Bosch Part Number 1 234 332 082. These are dirt common, too...which is about the only part on our '64 dizzies that is.

Thanks Greg. I wanted to be sure, since I've got an NOS cap on it to go along with the NOS rotor. My only problem at the moment, is that I'm not getting any spark out of it. I'll have to pull it and check it over tommorow.
At least the starter turns the engine over, and all the lights but 1 head light work (I think it's a ground issue, as it wants to light, but just kinda glows a sickly yellow). Or it could be the bulb (they are old and used).

gregson1 Wed Jul 27, 2011 9:09 pm

That rotor should have a 5K Ohm resistor in it, if I remember right.

I have a 'NOS' cap that has a flaw in the center spring loaded contact, which interrupts the spark. It sure looks nice, though...including its nice mint blue VW box. NOS sometimes really means that a part's never been tested or proven to work.

You're getting really close with that car. It's looking great and I like the brakes. Really nice work, as always.

Ground missing and it grounds the low light filament via driving light filament, thus both glow with bright red or very pale yellow or something between that. :)

Last time I got that (in bus, faint reddish glow), the real fault was inside the bulb(!), but symptoms are very familiar.

(
http://kharon.suomiforum.com/www/wiima/IMG_0747.jpg shows the bulb after I heated the solder pads with the soldering iron: One soldering was very bad from the factory and failed after the bulb heated a bit, very nasty fail type. :)

Afternoon All,

Well, I wasn't home for the Momentous occasion, but it's Official, as of 12:40 P.M. today....

"Wolfie Lives!"

Now the details:

Yesterday, the problem was No spark.

It turns out the breaker points weren't triggering. (Bob still needs to figure out why.)

He just put in a S.V.D.A. one that he had set up as a spare for the '65 Notch. The motor fired right up! WOO HOO!! and he ran it for the 20 minute break in time.

Afterward, he checked the timing, was WAY off- like 30 degrees at idle. Reset it to "0", then checked it at high rev, and was reading at 26 degrees. Good.

Then he checked the carb synch- was stiil close.

Bob then cleaned up the air cleaner, filled it to the red line with oil and installed it.

Man, I wish Russ was still with us, as I'm positive Bob would've been on the phone with him, to share the Joy!

I hope Russ is watching, and smilin' ear to ear, in approval.

Fantastic news and yes, Russ is doing a "happy dance"!

Bob then went on to see what was up with that bum headlight. He pulled it out, tested it, worked fine, reinstalled it. It's working again, just fine. Says he'll just have to keep an eye on it.

I think "Wolfie" just likes all the attention!

I'm sure he is. 8)

Yeah, I don't know why that OE distributor wasn't working. All I know, is that I didn't have any spark, and I even changed the coil (was having an Adriel moment  ). So today with a clear head, I put the VOM on it (after I pulled it out), and found that it wasn't triggering. Since the points were opening and closing, it didn't make sense. But the VOM reading wasn't changing, as the points were doing their job, which told me we had a problem. So I just swapped it for a SVDA I had here ready to go (it's a spare I carry in the 65 Notch that's ready to go), and wired it up. Well the coil I swapped in last night, didn't work, so I put the 1 I had already in place back on. It lit right off, and I knew I was good to go now. I let it run for 20 minutes, then shut it off, and set up my timing light to check the timing, then I checked the car synch. I shut it off, and then looked into that headlight issue. Pulled it apart, and tested it again, and it worked. Put it back together, and it's still working. I'll keep an eye on it though.

I may leave the SVDA in there, as you can get parts for them most anywhere, versus that special 2 year only unit. Might make a nice display item at the shows.

I spent the rest of the day tearing into the drivers seat. It's seat bottom is stripped to the bare metal, and I did get the seat recliner? to move again. It's basically ready for sand blasting now. Next up will be the upper half, so it can get blasted at the same time.

I'll have to get Sue to post up the new engine pics, and "her" custom pedal pushing seat (that I used to drive Wolfie out of the shop. 8) \:D/

This was Bob's first attempt at firing up "Wolfie" yesterday:

I had intended on doing a series of pics, in lieu of a video, culminating in his Big Smile once the engine fired off... but it seems "Wolfie" had other ideas.

As promised, a shot of my makeshift drivers seat, for "pedal pushing":

Air cleaner cleaned up and installed:

Fresh air connector tube, with the heater flap, (a carb only part), out of his stash:

And, finally, a question:

Which set of these door sills is correct for a '64, the ribbed ones or the smooth? Both sets came with car, the ribbed ones are a little nicer. So I'm betting the smooth ones are correct, just our luck!
