I have been looking at oil filters and such and I think I have decided on the CB Maxi 3. There are two different "models" and I'm not really sure which one I need. One of them says it is for '70 and earlier and it "fits aftermarket performance cams with bolt on gears or stock cams with flat gears" and then the other is for '71 and later and it "fits stock cams with dished gears." My case is from between '75 and '79 but my cam is an aftermarket performance cam. What do I do??

get the "early" pump

CB's pumps have larger oil holes to match a late model case, and most all aftermarket cams are early 3-bolt type.

So really it fits a late case with an early cam, which never existed, but it's how 90% of our engines are now

Ordered the pump and remote filter! I was just thinking about the exhaust... How should I go from whatever size the bent pipe is to the 2" muffler?

modok Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:35 pm

I think the......... whatever you call it, "muffler adapter pipe" piece IS 2", so either the muffler will fit right on the end, or you could use some 2" to 2' adapter pieces from the autoparts store to space it out as needed

The loudness of the muffler can be tuned by how long a piece of tailpipe you stick in the other side. a 6" length of tailpipe added will quiet it down a lot, if the neighbors ever complain......though I doubt they will

Thanks a lot! So I just realized that I only buy one adjustable pushrod to figure out the length I need and then I just cut mine. Is that right?

66brm Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:43 pm

Yes you only need one adjustable rod and a full set of 8 cut to length ones

69bajaguy Tue Dec 06, 2011 6:46 pm

Haha okay. At first I was thinking that I get a set of 8 and use them for pushrods

Well I called Dan's Performance Parts where I was planning on getting my exhaust and the guy said that their 1 1/2" baja exhaust doesn't seem to be much difference in size from the 1 3/8" when they measured. He also said the kind I was planning on getting, which is just the header with a flange, is not as good as the actual merged exhaust. And then to make it worse, their J tubes are 1 3/8". :( Help?

69bajaguy Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:34 pm

Checked the jets in my carb. It looks like I have 50 idle jets, 200 air corrector jets, and 115 main jets. Good? Bad?

modok Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:36 pm

they are confused
The header we're looking for does not use j-tubes, rather, the 1/3 pipes go up and get in the way of changing that spark plugs, yea, that's the one you want
I bought it from cb

The first pic is what I was planning on. Something that will accept heat when I go that route. The second is what it seems like you are talking about Modok. I know this offers better performance but it does not offer any heat possibilities.

modok Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:00 pm

OK, I missed the need for heat, sorry
I don't tend to think of heaterboxes on a baha, usually they are removed for ground clearance
Yes, the header for heater boxes will probably be 1 3/8 tubes, and if running heaterboxes that is probably the way to go anyway.

69bajaguy Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:03 pm

Man I really would have liked heat... I guess I'll just go with the merged "competition" exhaust. On the bright side... I got more parts delivered today! Just a few things left and I'll be ready to start building! :D

modok Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:09 pm

This is the one I was thinkin

I don't think the motor will know if it's "merged" or not, but the expensive one is more impressive looking, more likely to fit, and heavier too :)

RockCrusher Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:56 pm

Get the one in your second picture and if they have it with a turn down after the collector that is even better. If you really want heat then get one of the oil coolers with a fan attached and mount it inside the car.

I run an empi exhaust with a hayabusa silencer. Super quiet and looks neat....in my opinion. I have run this exhaust on even my old 2276....

What is the size of yours and where did you get it? The header and j tubes, that is.

RockCrusher Tue Dec 13, 2011 9:43 pm

Your car and engine look great but your low hanging oil filter scares the life out of me!
Not running a K&N or Mobil1?

MURZI Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:26 am

The exhaust is a 1.5 inch empi unit that I modded for the hayabusa exhaust.

Paul, the oil filter is a wix unit. I now use a wix chrome Harley filter, CARQUEST 85225.

And the cool thing about the exhaust is it is modular.......stinger when I want to be raunchy....  [/youtube]

RockCrusher Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:58 am

I was more concerned about the filter getting hit. I know lots of people hang them on the exhaust studs but I never liked that scenario.
