Partnumber of the "T coffee can" air filter is 1 29 601 a according to my VW part list (sep 1950). It was used on all models, except for the Hubmüller, which was fitted with the 14 1 29 601 a.

Been digging around a researching some parts for a 66 beetle I am getting revived. Car has not seen the road since the mid 80's. Not the original engine or anything, but I figured I might as well make it look somewhat correct.

Car came with the later air cleaner pictured, and a neighbor gave me the other one. Production dates are less than a year apart, and the only difference I can find is the sticker placement of the later one.





This one has the decal located on top of the snout...







And this one (earlier production) has the decal located on the base of the cleaner itself.








Neither are correct for a mid-year production 66 export beetle, but I figured they might as well fit into the documentation in this thread. In fact, I had no clue what the 66 bug actually used, until I found it in here. The Samba is the greatest research tool for a VW hobbyist.

I'll run the later one for now, and seek out a functional "correct" version in due time. I might even have one in the junk pile, but it is buried deep under snow currently.

I did not found that evidence in this thread... are perhaps those filters only for the italian market?

p.s. don't care for wiring from filter, I'm testing a solenoid to governate flap action depending on temperature.

Are there date stampings on the filters? While most of the pics here tend to be of US market filters, Europe continued to have 1200s and filters for those engines were different I think than the filters of the 1300 and 1600 engines of the same years.

Here are some pictures of my two 40 hp Beetle Knecht air cleaners. The one for the 1964 engine has a date stamped in the flap, while the one for the 1961 doesn't appear to have a date stamp. Also here is a drawing of the elusive flap bearing. I plan on having my son 3D print it using nylon material for a test. I'm not sure about the 6mm hub diameter; the other dimensions are pretty close. Now to find a flap assembly that actually needs a new bearing for a test fit. I actually had very good luck 3D printing a new horn ring insulator for my 1961, but it took a couple tries to get it perfect.

Appears to be the one for '53 - '66. The wrinkled appearance of the one in the photos may have been due to positioning or distortion caused by heat/age.

I have a '68 1300 Deluxe Beetle (European model). My question is regarding the hot air hose connection - specifically towards the front end of the engine. On my car, it goes around the fan shroud, through the hole in the front engine tin and then .... just hangs there? It comes out right in front of the left side heat exchanger box (passenger side on my car, since mine is a RHD car that I have imported here). On my car, the heat exchanger has a blocked off plate but I've seen heat exchanger with a small connector which is exactly in the correct place for this hose. Is the hot air hose supposed to be connected to the left side heat exchanger or just left hanging there?

Yes, it should connect to the heat exchanger port.

You are welcome. I happened to see your post, I had the time, and I knew where to look for that photo. You could probably weld/adapt something to your heat exchanger if it's not important to you to have a perfect, stock looking setup.

You are welcome. I happened to see your post, I had the time, and I knew where to look for that photo. You could probably weld/adapt something to your heat exchanger if it's not important to you to have a perfect, stock looking setup.

I need to have a perfect setup .... so any clue on where to find the correct heat exchanger box ?

Are you sure it is a 68? All the photos of 1300's that I have seen do not have any hose going through the fan shroud.

The Feb 1968 1500 RHD I have certainly does NOT have any connection to the heater and all the photos I see of the RHD 1300 also do not show any hose through the fan.

Maybe it was a late model addition. Perhaps post the first few digits of your engine number. My understanding is that it should be in the range F1237507 to F1462598.

OK. So you have a low compression 37BHP Non USA M240 code, not the higher compression motor with F0,F1,F2 engine number.

Interesting that yours is very close to my RHD 1500. Feb 68 118570727.

Yes that’s correct. It’s a European car that was sold in Pakistan. My father was the buyer and I recently imported it to TX from Pak. I believe the equivalent model is a ‘69 here … but the engines here were 1500. There are a few similarities but a lot of one year items (don’t ask how I know that) on my car.

It’s been a fun journey so far !

VW changed model years at their plants after the summer break, which was the end of July. Model year 1969 began in August 1968.

As for the carburetor preheat, a service note:



I've seen quite a few used heat exchangers over the years with the 25mm preheat fitting on them with the metal plug on it mentioned above.

I bought a 64 bug a month ago with a 1600cc dual port and single Solex. It came with a round paper filter and no pre-heat to the carb. I found an early Mann filter and put together a pre-heat approach to feed the air cleaner with the 25mm hose. As you can see from the pics, I'm missing the flap assy. I saw the drawing someone shared for the bushings but have nothing on the wire form or weight. Ideally I would love to find an assembly but will make something from scratch. If anyone wants to sell me any of the parts, great! Otherwise and dimensions of the weight and a sketch of the wire form or flap, also great! thanks steve
