I just went and checked out my extra KNECHT that I have, and can't find a date on it anywhere. I even took a scotch brite to the underside where the MANN is dated, and got nothing.

The photo does not show the part # very well but I used some chalk to be sure and the number is 113 129 611A. I did find the date stamp on the bottom and it is 01/60. The car is very original so this may well be the original air cleaner. The May 1960 parts list that I looked at does agree with that part number.

and I believe my 60 was built in Jan. I don't see a date on my KNECHT though

So I guess the Knechts don't have any date stamps? Hey Aaron did you get a chance to look the filter on your 58?

Here is an original EMPI air cleaner accessory to replace the stock oil bath top half on '67-'73 1/2 Beetles.
With this top half you also got a replaceable and more modern gauze type filter element...

1972 Super Beetle 1600 Dual Port air cleaner with vacuum fittings for thermostatically controlled valve for pre-heat tube flap diaphragm. Also has the driver's side connection for fuel vapor system connecting to charcoal canister under passenger side fender. Connection on passenger's side of fan-housing also goes to charcoal canister.

These are both mentioned as 1962. I've read other places that one is early model year 1962 (August 1961 - March 1962ish) and the other is later 1962 model year (April 1962ish - July 1962ish)?

Early

OR

Late

Does this sound correct? Does the later one go into the 1963 model year?

The top air cleaner has the decal for a Zenith-equipped 356 with a replaceable paper "Micro-star" filter element...

Note; there is no crankcase devise or tube to the air cleaner.

D.

i hate to say it but thats an earlier cleaner. is your car from australia or canada?

No, it's a Jan. 1965 production European Type 111 "A" Sedan--former standard designation that uses the last year a 36 hp engine was used in a beetle. It also uses for the last time a 28 PIC manual choke.
If it were a 1965 Canadian Type 111, 1200 Custom it would have the 36 hp engine with a 28 PCI manual choke carburetor, but would use the same air cleaner with the long snout for the pre heat on the left side and the crankcase hose on the right that all 40 hp engines use.
On some European models a crankcase devise was not required until 1967.

Quick question air filter gurus....will a 69 air filter have any clearance issues with the deck lid on a 66 Beetle?

thanks,

Mark

Does anyone know how long the smaller hose that runs from the snout to the oil filler for the early 62 air cleaner is?

No, but the long hose version is more efficient for getting crankcase vapors out of the engine crankcase.

OK, referenced Progressive Refinements. The hose did indeed change location from the intake to the reservoir, February 20, 1962 chassis 905991 and engine # 6519664 for the type 1 and about the same time for the Ghia.

Now that's settled.

Only if you want to close the engine lid!
Get a 1966 air cleaner or the 1966 style air cleaner with the post 1967 preheat tube as seen on page one for the post-1968 engines in pre-1967 Beetles.
