Read our post on page one....

I did a search on that part# and found only information about eu 1300 and 1500 cars. Also i do not know if SP / DP makes a difference as to what you run. Avail is another concern i have not seen one on the classifieds on thesamba. Just wondering what would be best run on that setup.

SP or DP should not really matter unless you are going for full race performance, and then you would be running dual carbs and an early cabriolet engine lid with the louvers in it for more air to the engine.

Then since that air cleaner is 90% the same as a 1966 1300 air cleaner you could use one of those instead. Only difference is the 1966 small 25mm tube preheat tube and the later 50mm used on each.

After that you have three choices:

Block off the later 50mm preheat hole in rear tin and live without preheat and suffer with any icing that occurs.

Do the above and keep searching the classifieds for the later air cleaner. They do show up now and then.

Use 1967 only rear tin to use the 25mm preheat or come up with an adapter so you can connect up the 50 mm to 25mm tube.....

Thanks.

It's already translated in the second line that says, "Under very dusty conditions, check daily and change oil if necessary."

My German is a little rusty but the only German word I can think of that means "conditions" is Bedingungen. It looks as thought the word is distorted. It looks like it has the same number of letters.

Also, there seems to be a LOT of little details of minor variations in this other thread, which are not captured here in this picture thread:

"61 oil bath filter VW number"
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=389108

There's a few pictures (new and old) of the early '61 air cleaner in that thread as well. (I'll send Everett a PM.)

While we're on the subject of air cleaners.

I'm in the process of cleaning up the stock air cleaner on my '66 Sedan and was wondering what the correct finish is on the outside. Is it gloss, semi-gloss or Satin Black? I've already painted the top with a gloss Black and it looks a bit too shiny.

Semi gloss, and a lot blacker than what is in your image.

It's a lot Blacker than the picture shows. The camera flash made it look more like charcoal.

You will also find that after time and polishing that satin black/semi gloss will get glossy.

Hi,

I've these three Knecht mushrooms, one with extra maintenance text, the other two without... Any information about these?

Thanks!

I have a pair of the type with the 2500km service stamping, which indicates that it is for a car engine as opposed to an industrial one that will have a 50 hour service recommendation. The Mann filter varieties come stamped with either the 50hr or the 2500km stamped into the top like the logos. However the Knecht ones without the 2500km rating came with an orange label so it could be multipurposed by either keeping the sticker intact when fitted to an industrial engine, or peeling off the orange label for some other purpose, like on a Porsche etc. I will say though that most of the pre-A's that I see with mushroom filters, tend to have the VW stamped/2500km variety.

Ok, thanks! I know these Knechts (without any extra text) should be gey... But they should not have the (orange) sticker when mounted on a car engine to be correct then?

Yeah, silver is the correct color usually, though I do see alot of Porsche ones (both with text and without sometimes) in L41 satin black, I don't know if that was a Knecht color or they were painted to match the tinware.

The orange labels I see usually mention a 50hr service interval (50 Betriebsstunden), so would be incorrect on a car, but is not a crime to have them if you like the look haha :D

Ok. Never saw the orange mushroom sticker with the '2500km' text (only those for the oil bath ones)... But, do they exist and, if so, were they ever mounted on those Knechts then?
Actually I do like the stickers!

Much appreciated!

Peter
