Really nice job there, Tram. The best of vintage, the best of later stuff to make it feel like a modern car... awesome!

Tram Tue Sep 30, 2014 12:15 pm

LOL, after I thought about it I realized I hadn't worded that very well in my haste to be brief, and someone caught it before I could ninja- edit. By the way, I fixed the fuse.

Original pan had serious rust issues.

Donor pan had issues with missing/ broken seat tracks, tunnel damage from where it looked like somebody hacked in to do "repairs", and a rusty battery tray.

I basically "married" the two pans taking what we needed from each to make it a solid example while retaining what we needed to do the conversion and welding in a battery tray. So, it was basically a pan repair on steroids.

I'm not working for the Mafia yet. They don't pay enough... and I enjoy sleeping at night.

It is a sunroof car! Tram does great work, and his attention to detail is why we all should take lessons!!

Very very nice Tram. Great looking combo of early and late. 8) Very well executed, and shows your attention to detail.

By the way, who did you source the front and rear window seals thru? I'm only asking, because I know you put the trim on. :D

I didn't do body/ paint (aside from aligning hood/ decklid/ doors/ fenders), and I don't know who's seals they are.

We did replace the popout seals, rear fender beading as I removed the rear fenders to reinforce where the engine carrier mounts go on, the pan seal, the front signal and rear reflector seals, and the taillight seals all from ISP.

Oh, and the fuel tank which is a FI tank with the original fill neck at the right rear cut off and welded shut and an under hood fill neck welded on, so we have all the correct baffles, etc..

Kind of the opposite of Tomnotch, who cut the bottom out of both a stock early tank, and an FI tank, and married the 2 together, to have an early FI fuel tank. I was going to do that myself (on my 65 Notch), until I ended up using my NOS early tank on my T-34.

Ok, Thanks. I'm just looking for those 2 seals for my own 65 Sunroof Notch. Didn't know if you used the ISP seals there, or from someone else.

Like I said, just like Keith. He kept claiming his squareback was stock. It got voted the darkest car at two different Invasions.

And now on with the show, featuring the custom ECU box where it would have been on a FI car, remote battery jumper posts, a BerT3 trunk liner, and mackaymanx alternator from Down Under:

Damn new dog- eared decal must go...

Need a little touchup on the trans pan

Bilsteins all around... Das Beste oder Nichts!

Factory paint marks abound...

A/C custom lines and fittings... A crimping tool is your friend. Note to self: touch up trans pan!

Under the hood- If the owner can pick up some matching material from ISP, I'd like to fabricate a cover to hide the lines. FI adapted tank.

Sweet period correct accessory outside mirror on the right side

The best I can do for a pic of things lit up at the console.

More later! D-Day is tomorrow.

Wow, that engine bay is beautiful. A real work of art there.

Is that bed liner stuff (rhino liner?) on the pan?

Fantasy car, never existed. couldn't have, its not in my garage. No one has seen one outside of Germany in 50 years! Die with that thing!

Tram wrote: This sort of mentality comes about when someone has an idea and posts it here asking for opinions about it, when all they're really looking for is validation that they're really re- inventing the wheel with their super- duper idea. hypocrisy (n.)
c.1200, ipocrisie, from Old French ypocrisie, from Late Latin hypocrisis, from Greek hypokrisis "acting on the stage, pretense," from hypokrinesthai "play a part, pretend," also "answer," from hypo- "under" (see sub-) + middle voice of krinein "to sift, decide" (see crisis). The sense evolution in Attic Greek is from "separate gradually" to "answer" to "answer a fellow actor on stage" to "play a part." The h- was restored in English 16c.
Hypocrisy is the art of affecting qualities for the purpose of pretending to an undeserved virtue. Because individuals and institutions and societies most often live down to the suspicions about them, hypocrisy and its accompanying equivocations underpin the conduct of life. Imagine how frightful truth unvarnished would be. [Benjamin F. Martin, "France in 1938," 2005]

Hey Geo... err, Tram. did you cut off and weld in IRS factory rear hanger mounts? Show those off if you can!

KTPhil Tue Sep 30, 2014 3:20 pm

Grade A Type 3 porn!

Tram Tue Sep 30, 2014 7:40 pm

And the rest...

Front end and brakes in progress from earlier in the project:

Some final shots:
Fusebox now with new plastic cover

Trans pain retouched

A/C lines tucked up underneath

The world's only injected automatic A/C sunroof car with five lug?

Car is tucked away in the shop awaiting reunion with its owner tomorrow AM. To answer an earlier question- yes, that is Rhino Liner on the pan... inside and out.

Tram Tue Sep 30, 2014 8:16 pm

Wait, a little encore:

Fye asked about the mounts. I removed the rear fenders and made hokey but very strong reinforcements out of very thick metal, then bolted and welded them in place, followed with seam sealer

It's ugly, but strong as hell, and spreads the tensile point out very well IMO.

For the mounts, I had to hack away the air duct drains on both sides, then welded up holders for the mounting points and attachec them with 12mm nuts/ bolts, then welded. I made deflector plates to cover the hacked away drain points angled down and away at the rear to let water drain and attached these with 2 sheet metal screws each to allow them to be removed for cleaning junk out if the drains should plug, like so:

The problem was, of course, that the hanger mounting points were still too low, so I decided that rather than hacking further into the air tunnel I'd space the hangers back up with garden variety parts store shock mount bushings. This had the advantage of providing even more cushion and reducing engine noise/ vibration further. And yes, they've all been torqued tight after the engine/ trans/ axles were all properly aligned to the body and sub frame.

Here's a close- up of the ECU box:

And one of the remote jumper lugs the owner specified:

This was a very long, complicated, and intense project but a fun learning experience, made longer due to health issues/ surgeries I've been battling the last few years. There have been approximately 500 trouble- free highway miles put on the car by the Disciple who agreed to be my guinea pig, and who lives approx. 30 miles south on I-5, so everything got a reasonable workout and test. The oil has been changed to synthetic Castrol 5W-50 now, the valves adjusted, the CO value adjusted, and all other setting set. It had a long going through today with all systems being tested and checked off.

I think I may sleep for a week after this.

Wow did I ever time my PM

Looks to be one that would make you want to sleep for a week. Very interesting to see all that stuff from different times married together.

Let me come up for air after tomorrow and I'll get caught up on PMs and stuff. Glad to see you popping in over here from Bay Pride Town once in awhile. :D
