I was ready a few years back!!
Let's talk seriously about this come spring. I have a very major 230SL project and a bunch of other big stuff still in the queue, plus I guess Bayboy is finally getting motivated to grease my palm on the long dormant 34 Cabrio project. I had planned to tool along on that alongside everything else anyways, but unfortunately I've needed to focus on jobs that pay the bills (having health issues in America ain't cheap- even with insurance!!) rather than "fun" stuff- and that includes my own projects that I have moved to the back of the line behind you and Jason even.
Nothing is going to be "fast" here as I still have a lot of catch up and I'm still not even really 75% after prostate surgery yet. What I have learned, though, is that everybody has a complaint... and if the complaint is "you took too long" and that only, I am resignedly happy with that.
I'm just not the firebrand invincible maniac that I was five, six years ago. I have to keep things reasonable for the slight handicaps I need to work with now. If I re-injure the old back thing again I will have no choice but fusion, which can't possibly be all that great of a thing given all the up, down, and fetal positions under dashes that i need to assume to do what I need to do.
The Disciple is a great help, and we've worked together so long off and on over the last decade plus that he instinctively understands how I want things done- and that is extremely valuable. He's really stepped up and saved my ass here through all my adventures involving cutting of flesh the last few years. But he's a "freelancer" who basically does his own mechanical biz thing involving junk that I'm too snooty to touch- American, Japanese, Korean, late model voodoo shit- and also a LPN (which is why I refer to him as "Nurse Ratchet" at times) so there are real limitations there too.
It is what it is. This is, after all, why God invented booze and narcotics. :D Sure, when I'm actually ready to bring it over, you come up with good excuses.
I'll have to figure out what to do with it this winter. I need the space in my barn for the wife and kids rabbits. They are the ones who wanted them, but guess who gets to take care of them. Same with the chickens and goats. Cows are next on their list. I'm going to have to get a full time job so I can get away from all of it. |

Not much- it made it back to Oregon OK, actually.
It was a weird one. One of the NOS trigger contacts was intermittently sticking open. This was what was allowing the car to cough but not start. I think the shot of ether would allow the engine to shake just enough to jar it loose so it would start working again.
The other thing was that somehow with all the futzing around down there the vacuum line from the underside of the throttle body to the trans modulator got knocked off. It's very tough- in fact almost impossible- to see unless you know it's there. That's why whoever adjusted idle speed down there had to screw the bypass screw almost all the way in- there was a rather large vacuum leak there.
Found those two issues and corrected them and she starts/ runs just fine again.
We're doing some further work. The top and trunk lid are going to be refinished, and the rear torsion arm bushings replaced as it is sagging and squeaking now. We're also going to remove, strip, and refinish the steering column. The sunroof teeth "skipped" while it was gone, so an overhaul there is in the works.
Finally, I will be re- designing the console as it was a nice presentation but too restrictive on the driver. I have it penciled out in a way that really shouldn't interfere at all, I think. The rear window defrost prototype is going to get redone with some machinery and a steadier hand this time.
More pics in a couple weeks. |

It wouldn't have helped. Something went wrong in the manufacturing of this set- it was a definite hard parts failure. No matter how I cleaned and lubed, that one point just hung open until some heat was applied. Since I have a bunch of these anyways, I just replaced the set. |

Let me guess, that was an NOS set that failed.
Closing off the idle screw should have sent a "red flag" up that there was a vacuum leak too. I realize it might not have been easily seen, but it still should have been noticable that something was "a miss" there. |

By way of update:
Old console design- just too restrictive of the driver's foot and leg:
Redesigned console:
Car is now two tone- "drapes match the carpet" so to speak...
Car got a bunch more goodies like a repaint of the trunk lid, cut and buff work on the hood, NOS column with signal switch and lock/ key, new original rear torsion arm bushings, rebuilt sunroof mechanism and seal, and a bunch of other little things sorted out. It goes to alignment Monday, then detail, then home. |
