It aint just VW electric cars, many, perhaps most electric cars use materials mined in horrible conditions, workers abused, few workers protections, and last of all little environmental protections at these mines, or in the production of materials in the refinery process.
Something the smug electric greenie car owners like to pretend isnt happening. It is all rainbows and unicorns as for their electric cars they like to think.
Not only that many of these materials are from shall we say, less than stellar nations as for civil rights. We buy materials from them, and their evil rulers rake in the dough.

You are quite right in pointing out the exploitation of those less fortunate but there's quite a bit of collateral damage done by us consumers not only in the EV space.

Building a new car consumes materials that are sourced from "less that stellar" nations regardless of how the vehicle is powered.

The US is a top tier exploiter for sure and will continue to do so.

Most EV owners I know aren't "greenies". They are fairly well to do and really don't think much about material exploitation.
The others tend to fall into the "hyper miler" group. Those folks are a strange bunch :D

much of the metals to build existing normal cars can be sourced from recycling existing normal cars. New normal cars use pretty much the same amounts of materials used in old normal cars.
electric cars however use vast amounts of materials that either were not used in normal cars (lithium), or are much larger amounts (Copper, Colbalt), and thus require lots of virgin materials to produce, thus the mining of materials in areas that have little if any pollution controls or worker safety laws.

A stupid title....or at least poorly researched. There was no stigma to driving a beetle in Germany....in1939. There were only about 50 made in 1939 and it was a huge new project to bring a ton of jobs and "motorize" the nation.

Now....a few years later.....for sure there was stigma!....but the stigma was about ANYTHING German....once the holocaust came to light.....and there was never a stigma in Germany toward driving the Beetle. Shortly after the war, the few beetles they had along with Messerschmidts and the little 3 wheeled refrigerator cars....were pretty much all they could produce.

Any stigma was in other countries AFTER the war.

While I agree with your above statements about VW, BMW, and Ford, why would I be walking? VW is a very different company post WWII. I would keep my Bug based beach buggy, my American made Toyota Tacoma, and my American made Hyundai Tucson -- and drive them.

(I may sell my '04 Tacoma single cab 2wd 5-speed Tacoma this year. Now retired, I only put 1038 miles on it last year -- and it only has 72k miles on it since I bought it new.)
