| It look right from here. Keep in mind that the flange lip of the opening goes in between the clips (gets sandwiched in place). A picture of it might be in the brown Bentley in the fuel system section too. |

Thanks Bob, that makes perfect sense. Most of the pics I've seen here on fuel pump posts, etc, don't have the most helpful camera angles. |

Yeah I know. On my wife's 70 Fastback, I eliminated the big plate, and just used the 2 smaller clamp plates. This was because I moved the pump to the middle opening while using the Airtex pump. Because of it's length, it puts the hose from the tank at a tight bend (possible kinked hose?), which is why I put it in the middle opening, versus the far right opening (passenger side). |

| Yes, that is the plan. It will be relocated to the center opening in the beam for sure, otherwise there is no way to connect the hoses without kinking them as you mentioned. I’m having a hard time imagining how the hoses would have originally been run through the larger holes in the mounting plate. I guess if you took the hose from the output side of the pump and curled it towards the front of the car then back through the hole it would be heading the right direction. |

Thanks Bob! I enjoy seeing things moved to the left. :D |

I gotta say I’m super grateful that you Experienced VW Gurus are still helping out us noobs with our projects, questions, and lack of knowledge. I’m sure it gets monotonous seeing the same questions posted over and over again. But you guys still take the time to respond.
For that I thank you.
I’ve been involved in the vintage BMX restoration scene for the last 15-20 years and I’ve met tons of people across the globe because of it. There are lots of good guys out there who will help out a newbie when asked, but lately the attitude on the forums has changed from sharing score stories and restoration tips to ridiculing new members who aren’t up to speed.
Cheers guys! |

No problem. We used to have quite a few people who have a lot of experience, but as time goes by they've died off. Russ Wolfe is a great example of that, as he was in all sorts of forums on here offering advice whenever he could. He was a great friend of mine, and I visited him whenever I could. I took his death pretty hard, as I got my T-34 from him after doing a bunch of metal work on it for him. He also supplied me with parts and advice too, over the years. My wife and I helped him reorganize his shop during "Russ Fest" one year. We spent a week out there doing the "heavy lifting". I didn't mind the 10 hour drive out to his house, as Russ and Marylin were good people.
I haven't met Tram in person, but I've gotten to know him over the years, and he's a pretty cool dude. I have gotten parts and advice from him as well. Maybe some day I'll drive out and visit him.
A lot of what I know about these cars is from taking them apart and rebuilding them. Kind of like a Haynes manual, but doing the work myself. I've been a type 3 owner off and on for almost 40 years too, with my first being a 66 Squareback that I bought off a dealer lot in 1984. |

I’ve heard of/about Russ. Seems like an amazing person, sorry for the loss of your friend.
I bought my first car, a ‘72 Squareback, back in 1988. I was young, did a few things to it like swapping the FI for dual carbs, lowering it a bit, steering wheel swap, etc.
But I’ve been doing maintenance on all of my vehicles since day one.
Hoping to learn some new skills with this one. 😎 |

Starting to feel like the butt of a bad joke. There is a snowball’s chance in hell that the required fuel injection hose clamps will actually fit on the fuel injection 7mm fuel hose.
The outer diameter of the hose is larger than the ID of the hose clamp. Wrong hose? Wrong size clamp? I don’t know.

Also just now realizing that the fuel pump barbed fittings are for 3/8 size hose. 😂🤦🏼♂️

I did get the fuel pump mounting plate/bracket assembly installed at least.

These should do the trick to connect to the fuel pump. Should be here in a few days.
Meanwhile, I’m still stumped on the FI hose clamp issue. I’ll have to see if they come in a larger size. |

Chalk it up to ignorance.😂
I just ordered the first FI hose clamps I came across and didn’t bother to check what size they were. They are for 5mm hose.
Back to ISP West I go. 😉

| I'd look for the FI hose clamps (like shown in your pic above) in an 8mm hose size. I only mention that as most of the fuel hoses on the 68 thru 73 type 3s are 5/16ths or 8mm. If you're replacing ALL of the FI hose, you'll need a 25 foot roll, and 35 clamps. Yes you might have a little left over, but it won't hurt to have some spares. The bonus of doing ALL of the hose at the same time is that you know how old they ALL are. |

Originally I did buy 20 feet of hose, and just 20 clamps. I know now that I’ll need more of each.
Gonna stop in to ISP West this week to test the 7mm FI hose clamps to see if they’ll work.
But there’s always something else to work on. I mentioned earlier that I’d be looking for a replacement gas tank, since mine has a few rust spots and pin holes. For now, I figured I’d clean it up and see if it will hold up temporarily at least. JB Weld tank fix patched the holes for now.

Funny you should mention ISP West Bob. I stopped in today and they took care of my brake line issue, and traded out the 5mm hose clamps I purchased by mistake for some larger units. Super cool guys, very helpful.
I felt a little better about myself when the gentleman told me that whoever packed up my hard brake line replacement kit used the wrong build sheet for the parts. They made it right. Super stoked.

Late model gas tanks for fuel injected type 3's are currently N/A.
It's on my "wish list." |

Yeah, I think fuel tanks for type 3s in general are getting hard to find. |
