I guess I am too old or something to understand all this paranoia. To me you take the same risk every time you go out in public to a grocery store, local FLAPS, car dealership, furniture store, pub whatever. No predicting when someone you encounter will rob you or just plain go postal!

It's the same fear that makes people think they have to cover their license plate when posting a car for sale yet leave it exposed in public and drive around all day!

If someone is going to kill you, you will be just as dead in front of a camera or a police station as anywhere else!

Maybe some things are just unexplainable... We live in a bubble wrap society I guess.

That's a good idea. Especially when I look up and see what "vestibule" means !!!

I dont do facebook, but I was looking for a replacement egr valve for my 1990 Jeep, it is a rare out of production part. My buddy looked on facebook market and found a NOS egr valve new in the dealer box for 80 bucks.

I was very very happy to find this part, and brand spanking new no less!!!

I still dont do facebook however.

I had a Facebook account early on when it first started when I was living overseas but I closed my account a few years ago as there was just too much crap.

I bought a few things off of FBMP over the years when I had my account without any issues but have always had good luck with Craigslist and use it regularly. However, if you are buying or selling anything of high value and will be carrying cash, meeting at the Police Station or a public place is advisable and bring a friend.

I will only do an e-transfer now for anything over $100 and let the seller know this in advance. I even bought my Bus via an e-transfer and you can adjust the limit for larger, one time purchases. I was asked to put a down payment via an e-transfer on something once and I refused as it felt scamy.

l had a faceache account until last year, for keeping in touch with friends all over the world.
l got caught up in the crap :( since deleting it, l spend much more time with my son.
l do miss out on the goings on with old friends, but spending quality time with my son is way more important.

Just picked a clean fuel tank for my 69 baja bug for $40. Nice seller, had a few more parts, and had just gotten a 66 beetle and 67 squareback to bring back to life.

I only joined FB a little over a year ago in order to use marketplace. I have no interest in the political BS, or even communicating with family this way. I do share some fun posts with my wife, however.

Lucky you! I live with mine and she seems to want old-fashioned communication in real time in the same room!

Usually happens when one of us is traveling or at work. She is sitting right behind me at the moment, reading a book by the woodstove.

Yeah, I broke and signed up due to MP, CL is just deader than dead. I don't share anything or have a host of phony "friends". Overall I find FB appalling and a horrid reflection of what our society calls "civilization". Its way worse in terms of nonsense than CL ever was.

Ive been looking for a pair of speakers to match a pair ive been using since 1990. Saw an ad on FB, the guy was away when I contacted him, asked if I could wait a week. When he got back, we set up a meet, i got the speakers, he got $30, and those bose 4.2's fill in the living room sound desert.

markswagen Sun Mar 02, 2025 7:07 am

it's people, not the platform, we had another lack of interaction from the seller.
a guy in the classifieds here, has a vehicle forsale, we have $ waiting, vehicle is 300 miles away, he says he wants to sell, but won't give us more than the name of the city he's in, and as far as pictures go, a 3/4 view from 100 yards away, and a close up of the VW badge.
the ad was first placed over a year ago, it's been updated often, and low and behold he still has the vehicle and it IS still forsale, at least that what he says if and when he bothers to answer the phone.

^^^Run Forest, run!^^^

That smells like a guy trying the "deposit to hold" scam! The car may or may not exist.

A few years back I was looking to buy a truck that was advertised on Kijiji. I had a Buddy check on it for me that lived in that same city. When all the dust settled it turned out to be a used car shark had posted a picture of someone's truck he found in a mall parking lot!

Ya! No, I will not give you a deposit to hold that one! Sorry!

I permanently deleted my Facebook account. I was already leery of adding to Zuckerberg's wealth by using his platform but lately I feel sick supporting these big tech guys.
I've also stopped using Amazon, switched by search engine to DuckDuckGo and cancelled my Cybertruck order.

That's what I call "Facebook Hide 'n' Seek".

It's not a social network. It's an anti- social network.

"Friends will help you move. True friends will help you move a body."

A VW body, silly! What did you think I was talkin' about?

Few days ago I was going to do a deal on a smaller item 250 miles from home mostly because I weas travelling and I would be nearby. Seller proposed meeting in a Mall- Wart parking lot additional distance away. I've had enough of these pseudo- dope deals. Sellers... when buyers flake on you it may be time for a little introspection.

The fb mktplace platform sucks! Try to list something that's not the norm and you have to put it in a category. My rv space for lease is currently advertised as a 10 bathroom 0 bedroom studio bc there is no category for a space for rent  And I was required to put in a number of bedrooms. Another guy around here has a Healy Bugeye for sale he has it listed as a Lotus, no category for Healy
A lot of the buyers suck too - "is this still available?" Yes you dumbass that's why it's listed for sale!
Unfortunately it's the go-to place for buying and selling now, sad.

Just sold an old Nissan truck a few days ago on FB. The very first line in my ad tells perspective buyers that if they respond with "is this still available you will be ignored". I deleted a handful of those right off the bat, and sold the truck in two days for a fair price.

Same thing for an AS41 dual port long block that I sold as a rebuild core, with video of it running before I pulled it. A couple of flakes, one guy that wanted me to deliver it 50 miles for free, and the actual buyer that drove 30 miles to me, handed me cash, and we had a good time talking about old VW's.

Sometimes, it works out just fine.

Dusty1 Tue Mar 11, 2025 7:25 am

Last ad I responded to the seller had all sorts of stuff I buy, musical instruments, car parts, a car that needs a motor, tires... buy it all, flip half of it.

Except...

It quickly devolved into typical Facebook Hide 'n' Seek / Facebook Pseudo- Dope Deal. "Meet me at midnight near the demolition container at the abandoned strip mall." Seller cited the usual "security concerns". Hey! I'm buying $2000 worth of your stuff. I'm going to have to rent a U- Haul to haul it all away.

He said something about keeping his family safe.

Yeah, right. How about keeping -me- safe? His pseudo- dope deal arrangement was like an invitation to a mugging.

Is he going to bring his "family" to the abandoned strip mall, whack me on the head and take my $2000?

On that note I used to walk the streets of NYC between midnight and dawn as a younger man. I'm not scared. Let's not play games.

In between messages I clicked on his profile. That's one click. Hey! Let's all tell Big Brother who we are and what we're doing.

Two more clicks, I have his phone number. I have his street address. Click on LinkedIn, I know where he works and what he does.

Like I said, let's all tell Big Brother who we are, where we are and what we're doing.

I was tempted to message him "Why don't we meet at your place?" and specify his address. Or maybe just call him? -BUT- we wouldn't want to intimidate some fuzzy little kitty cat who may never confront his fears.

He ended up tellin' me he doesn't need to sell the stuff and he doesn't need my money. Yeah right, buddy. That's why you have 30 ads on Marketplace.

Next topic: $800 Toyota Tacomas on Facebook.

They're all scams. Check it out.

Doesn't matter where you are. Search "Toyota Tacoma" then set the price range starting at $800. You'll find a lot of listings with similar text and "studio" lookin' pics. Then click on the seller's profile. You'll find the same truck listed from Sacramento to Secaucus. Are any of them legit?

This makes me wonder how many people who bitch about "Seller never replied" sent them an insulting offer.

Of course no one complaining about that on here has done that. :)

And I agree a bunch of sellers are flaky or don't reply at all.
I've experienced this too.
