Sellers loathe divulging their location. That's a big part of the Marketplace Handa- Jobba.

I'm workin' a deal buying a vehicle eight hours away. I'm tryin' to work a "gravy" deal on parts that would otherwise be outta my reach in the same area. They're not worth the drive by themselves.

Seller is playin'

"Marketplace hide 'n' seek."

Sellers who use FB Marketplace: If you wonder why buyers blow you off.
that's why.

.
.
You must have a general idea where the seller is located if you know they are eight hours away.
I’m not comfortable giving a potential buyer the exact location of NeverDone Ranch unless I’m sure I have a sale.
We are just wrapping up an estate sale here.
I sold several items off FBMP this weekend with no issues.
Obviously, your results may vary.

Scored a service for 12 of Royal Dalton to match my Christmas set for $250

Now I’ve got enough for Thanksgiving dinner for both NYC and LI

So? I can't buy anything without a specific location. I can take a leap of faith and pay for it. How am I supposed to pick it up?

The seller has no skin in the game.

Somewhere beyond eight hours on the road I could die. Falling asleep at the wheel is a very real possibility.

Why oh why would I drive eight hours each way if there is any possibility a seller is going to blow me off?

Why would I drive one hour towards a seller who won't divulge their location? "Don't waste my time."

BTW I drove the eight hours down, ten back. Seller never divulged their location or offered to meet. They're selling a Vanagon in or near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Oh, wait. They're here in TheSamba Classifieds.

people are stupid, and are getting dumber as time goes on.
nothing much can be done about it.
the only hope is that these folk will become to dumb to figure out how to procreate, and they'll die out.
but l think we are a away off of that yet.

More I think about it, that's just crazy.

You're risking having me show up at your place with a shit ton of cash in a shoebox 'cuz a cigar box is too small.

I'm risking havin' someone relieve me of my cash without commensurate exchange of goods or services.

Seems to me the risk is all on my end of the deal.

It sounds like your purchases are large dollar. As far as FBMP goes, I deal in nickel dime crap that my ancestors collected.
I get no shows on occasion. Almost all my sales are local. Cash and pleasantries are exchanged.
The few large ticket purchases I have made the funds are deposited into escrow. I use https://www.escrow.com/
Protects buyer and seller.
Something to ponder before that next eight hour trip.

In general , half the population is getting smarter , and half stupider. I’m getting skilled at finding the latter.

We retired our self assembled , poor kids 35 year old dining room chairs for 12 Ethan Allen’s on local FMB for $500. These puppies sell for $500 each, used! Managed to get all 12 in/ on the Volvo wagon

You got a dozen puppies for 500 bucks? One is named "Ethan", another one is "Allen"-- what do you call the others?

I drove about 100 miles to get a Leer camper top for my Tacoma. It was also color matched to my truck and they helped me install and it was priced right. I’ve never been a seller but have done well a few times as buyer. I bought Amish solid oak furniture reasonably but make a blanket statement the FB marketplace is a waste of time doesn’t fit all scenarios.even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and again 😂

My Marketplace purchases are a mixed bag. Most purchases are within an hour's drive. Recent purchases are:

Craftsman USA socket set about an hour each way. I didn't know it was almost complete until I took another hour to sort inventory all the pieces.

Lincoln welder four hours each way.

I've bought more wheels and tires than I can keep track of.

Drove an hour to look at a Bug. Embarrassing. I kicked the tires but didn't buy. Too close to the first of the month.

Then there was the Pennsylvania purchase. In broad terms it rolls on four 37-16.5 tires and it cost a lotta money.

Previously,

I picked up two VW long blocks for chump change in Syracuse. One is built on a Mexican case, the other is Brazil. I drove four hours out to my mother's place then another two hours to Syracuse. We met at the seller's workplace and did the deal out by the dumpster. I was there exactly precisely when I said I'd be there even though I must have driven every cowpath in upstate New York. I exchanged green Yankee dollars, no BS, no haggling and off I went.

Next Syracuse VW motor deal was hide 'n' seek. Seller says I can see his place from Lowe's but won't give a specific location. Near as I can tell he still has his motors.

Honorable mention: Got a series BE Craftsman ratchet set at NEARfest, an übernerdfest. Spent an hour talkin' to the contingent from MIT 'cuz what the heck, Buckminster Fuller spent an hour talkin' to me when I was that age. 8)

Seller tells me the series BE socket set is circa 1939.

Yeah, me too. I attract weirdos like a neodymium magnet attracts iron filings. Re- connected with an old riding buddy who must have tried to stick his head in an oven between now and then. He stuck his head in the conservative echo chamber instead. His conversation includes contrails, eating babies and various other topics near 180 degrees outta phase with reality.

Apparently too much exposure to internet forums and / or internet content is akin to excessive consumption of LSD.

I like hot dogs. Hamburgers are better.

The blind squirrel scenario doesn't work for me. I need to reduce potential failure mode as much as possible, otherwise FB Marketplace is literally a waste of time and fuel.

Twice this week people worked out a deal for a price reduction and THEN told me they had no ride and asked me to drive 20-30 minutes each way to deliver. No deal.

Aw, shucks. You could have met us in Scranton and claimed your share of our money.

It's only an inch away from Williamsport on the map. :D

Kidding. Seriously now, that wasn't me.

Once we get rolling we keep rolling. You do have a few goodies in TheSamba classifieds.

Just picked up a second five gallon bucket of top quality house paint for half price. If you've seen the price of paint recently, it was worth it. Seller was excellent and the transaction went smooth as silk.

Tried to buy 2 parts bugs from different sellers and could not get a damn address out of them despite being vetted through my feedback. No idea what happened....

cdennisg Tue Jun 04, 2024 5:20 pm

Just sold a set of truck tires. Smooth transaction, met at the grocery store parking lot a few blocks from my house.

oprn Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:50 pm

I just picked up a home made chop saw from FG MP, built like a brick $hitthouse and cost me $20!
