As mentioned before I do not do parking lot/back alley pseudo drug deal style purchases anymore. Turns out on further investigation that he WAS a drug dealer and I got screwed over royally!

If the seller is afraid to disclose his place of residence/work to meet me then the deal is not legit, the goods are not as advertised. Sorry, I'm out. I want to be able to bring the item back and have a discussion if it does not work as promised.

Well... "immigrants" bought the Tacoma I was after Friday. I was standin' right there as the deal went down. Didn't even get the cash outta my pocket. Thing is the truck had a lot of little things wrong with it not the least of which was it popped a brake line which the seller replaced without bleeding the brakes. That's skipping a necessary step. But... the truck had a solid frame and a rust free body. It's getting rare to find a solid Y2k- 2004 Tacoma here and those are the good ones.

Buyers paid cash and got the title signed over. The did a screwdriver registration and drove off whistlin' Dixie.

I stopped about a half mile away to look at a nicely preserved '50s Ford pickup. "Wash it" (say that three times fast and you'll get the point), here comes the "buyers" in the opposite direction to when they left minutes ago. They were returning to the seller's, mostly can't imagine why. They shouldn't be able to claw back money from an "as- is" deal and if they did they still had the signed- over title.

I tried to PM the seller and offer to buy if his deal with the other buyer boomeranged. Seller had already marked the listing as "sold" which eliminates the PM tab on the listing. So that's that.

That's why I always use a fake Return Address on packages of stuff that I sell on theSamba. You can never be too careful.

It's interesting. I tell people to not be so worried about your address....first....when dealing with on-line meet up purchases/trades/exchanges. Yeah, sure....one worries that if you have something desirable/valuable....they may just come try to take it from you.
However that problem exists anyway.

The first thing to hold back is your actual NAME. Do not give them your real last name and do not meet at your own property if you can help it if you are worried at all.

There is probably not a single person on these forums (unless you are working hard at it) whose address I cannot find in about 10 minutes if I know your actual name and state.

Long story but the bottom line is after getting fucked around by everyone...electricians, carpenters etc I just bought a truck

The rental fees around here are stupid for a man lift....like 1K for basically a "long weekend" plus a 2-400 "mobilization fee" to get it here

So I set out to find the cheapest piece of shit I could, and boy did I

Couple more things to finish but i'm happy with it

I goes higher than I want to be and is still terrifying as fuck, but 100x better than working off a ladder

I strongly disagree with this. I enjoy my privacy and protect my security. I DO NOT want strangers and unknown people coming to my house so they can look around and see what I got to come back at a later date to rob and steal. If I'm selling something I have no interest in any further association with whatever I just sold once its gone. When I sell something it's "AS IS" and they are not coming back looking for a refund when they break it or it doesn't work for them.

1000% agreed!
The one thing or two things I like about marketplace is that you can to a degree, see who you're about to do buisness with. If you click view their profile.
I like not letting some rando have my cell number or know where I live.

My personal policy after being screwed too many times:
If you want my stuff you can come and get it at a local spot of my choosing 5 min from my house. No i'm not driving an hour for a $50 deal. No i'm not delivering my stuff to your sketchy neiborhood with nowhere to park and your unleashed shitzu in the yard.

What about those people who agree on a $40 price then show up with a $100 bill and expect change?! Had that happen more than once, usually with a language barrier.
Or after you drive for 40min to be nice with an agreed price, only to have the buyer show up with $100 less?

Then theres the guy who leaves you a bad review for everyone to see. Because he didnt get your sweet snowboard for half the selling price.

Buying shit sucks, selling shit sucks. Even giving shit away for free sucks. Ive had stuff sit on my porch for weeks before the person claims it.
Ive got a nice mountain bike i'm not sure how to sell without getting robbed. Life of living in the Bay Area.

Are you worried they'll ride off with it?

On some Bike Forums I've read, people say they ask to hold all the money up front before they let the person do a test ride.

I've bought a few expensive bikes and never had that request but I was at their house with my car there. I'm not going to ride off with the bike and leave my car.

Schepp Tue Sep 03, 2024 12:00 pm

Either they ride off or pull a gun and take it. The laws here in CA protect the theives. Its really screwed up. I had my catalytic converter stolen and all I could legally do was watch the 4 of them take it. The police caught them down the road but they were out the same day. If I pulled a gun or hurt them in any way, I'd be in jail and sued.

Yea i'll have to figure out something like they leave their keys and license with me or something.

I could use something like that. Power company put up a security light across the street that is so bright we have to draw the shades at night. and they won't do anything about it.

Big long pole with a rattlecan of black paint taped to the end, and a stick and string trigger of some sort?

Air powered high speed lead injection nuggets might work, too.
