Congrats, Dave. She looks really nice in her new paint job and BEING ON THE ROAD!!!! Nice repaired bumpers and cladding.

We barely have any buds at all on anything up here, but sugar season may still continue for a bit. Two fairly fierce snow squalls during the day, but only 3/4" stuck. Surprised the town crew wasn't out wearing down the hard facing so they could re weld it and make some overtime.

Well...... I'm ready to roll.

I am about as prepared as can be for a simple 3 hour back road cruise as I can reasonably be.

Honestly my biggest worry is my pup. This will be his longest ride ever...... and the first in the Van.

I just finished trimming and brushing him...... he has a new cousin dog to meet tomorrow.

Oh! ..... it turns out I was mistaken or one healed and the other failed?

But .......

My back to back seal leak is gear oil, not ATF.

Crap. Why do bad things happen to nice guys??? I guess that's the reason I don't have any bad things happen to me. "I'm the luckiest man alive."

Let's hope it's a finger tight bolt someplace.

Left Early, just my Pup Beau and I, a guys day out

To say Beau was nervous about the Van would be an understatement!
He loves going in the car, but he is in the rear seat in a sling fastened to the headrests.
This was a new experience that started with the terrifying SCREEEEEETCH!! BANG! Of the sliding door.
I had but a blanket between the front seats which he sat on and refused to move off of....... he sat, no lying down, looking out over the dashboard.
As a bonus? I had to be touching him almost constantly. If I had let him, he would have sat on my lap.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I headed out avoiding all major roadways, Interstates or interstate like roads.

I took back roads and actually drove right by BusDepot, it pained me that I didn't have an order to pick up!

From there I headed to Doylestown and stumbled across a memory from long ago when my Wife and I were dating 50 some odd years ago and we ended up quit by chance at the Moravian Tile Works.
This spot has always been special to us...... it was a pleasant surprise to see it again! It does seem to have gotten much more refined and sterile........ progress?

https://www.thetileworks.org/

To celebrate, Beau got out and peed.

Beau had been sitting nicely on the back seat...... until I decided to take a photo!

From there we headed towards New Hope Pa. Yet another funky old town taken over by rampant commercialism.
My Wife and I used to spend days out here 50 years ago when it was a hamlet of the old hippy artisans..... it seems that they've been replaced by common shop keepers.
sadly the free bridge to New Jersey is closed so we crossed into New Jersey on the 202 toll bridge.
We followed 202 for quite a ways going through Flemington, one of the original outlet shopping areas, it too has been swallowed up in mass retail attempts and is bumper to bumper traffic.

As we drew close to my Brothers home we passed by a great New Jersey icon, the Circus Clown. This clown has stood for as long as I can remember and is in the book Weird New Jersey. I've read it is currently threatened by the wrecking ball........

After visiting my Brother and his new dog we headed home.

Beau for this part of the trip had come to accept the vehicle and the journey.
He settled right in on the passenger seat.

Penn Dot must be expecting ice with tomorrows forecast, they have been brining the highways.
If they aren't expecting ice, they may just be using the coming storm as a way to dump excess mixed brine before Summer rolls in ?

A trip over the Delaware on the Riegelsville Bridge, this is a historic Bridge built by Roebling, the same firm that constructed some much more famous bridges such as the Brooklyn.

And home we went.

I have searched for the "perfect" cup holder for years without success. They all lacked in some manner or another.

Last Fall I found this printed cup holder on Etsy. It piqued my interest and seemed like the solution I've sought for so long.
I snagged it and with getting the Van back on the road I'm able to test it.
I'm very pleased with it.

I selected the black option with the storage tray. It was $50 but I'm thinking it is going to prove to be worth it.

Oh wait!

I forgot to say how the Van worked!
Keep in mind this has been sitting since...... September..... and it is now almost April.
Upon start up I had a symphony of lifters singing to me.
It took a little bit of time but they quieted down.

1) The differential oil weeping out the weep hole produces just enough oil to make it stink link gear oil.

2) Under certain conditions, a THUNK from the RF wheel. I already have new ball joints from T3, I need to see how bad it now is.

3) The high idle from the sticking throttle body, but that part will be here next week from GoWesty,

4) I need to research the relationship of engine RPM to MPH in 3rd gear.
The Automatic transmission pulls good, shifts good, no funny noises but it seems to me that I have fairly high RPM's for top gear?
On a flat cruise.....
55 MPH 3500 rpm
60 MPH 3700 rpm
65 MPH 3900 rpm

Overall ....... once I look at that RF wheel I would be quite comfortable hitting the road.

During my travels the past few days, I've gotten the normal thumbs up and "what year?" Comments.

This morning it is pouring rain so I took it to the hardware store to get some items and test the wipers and such.

Now, I'm not a McDonalds hater and I support the Ronald McDonald House for the great work they do for families in need.
I stopped to get breakfast, what I consider to be one of their better meal offerings and the coffee isn't bad.....the hash browns? Tasty, but greasy as all get out.
Anyway I pull up to the pay window and it flies open almost leaving its tracks.
This high school age head leans out and looks the length of the Van and exclaims "How much? I just got my license yesterday and this is exactly what I want.......... After fees and insurance I have $2.06!"

Sadly I broke his heart by turning down his generous offer.........

When I registered my Van as an Antique they said it would be a month or two before my plate arrived.

Look what came today!

I know that I carry too many tools but sadly they aren't always handy.

I use a Home Depot tool caddy as a center console organizer with lots of pockets.

I grabbed a few cheap common size wrenches to keep in the bag. Who doesn't need a 10 or 13 mm wrench frequently!?

When I painted my Van, I was pushing the season. Winter was rushing upon me and the warmth clock was ticking rapidly.

I painted the Van and only later realized that I had forgotten to paint the sliding door track cover.

Once found I painted it at the next good opportunity.

Sadly that night the temperature plummeted and the fog rolled in.
All the shine left.
The question is can I buff this back or is a repaint called for?

Sorry, but repaint. The problem is moisture interacted with the paint itself changing the molecular structure. It's as though you want to unfry an egg. Now that you have made the panel easily removable, it shouldn't be too big a deal to re shoot it.

You could try to cover it with a gloss clear top coat, but you won't get a match. This is a 10 foot paint job, so give the temp fixes a try--maybe you'll get lucky.

You'll spend more time and effort trying to get that to maybe look right than if you repaint it...

I agree ....... I've got the paint, not a big deal to do.
One of these days this Summer I'll give it a shot.

On the plus side, I just filled up my gas tank and am quite pleased with the numbers.....

16.496 mpg.

This was a real mix of driving various roads and speeds.

I've been battling some demons with my new GoWesty Throttle Body.

These demons involve the throttle plate range of motion, the kick down detent and closing the TPS at the proper time.
Also a very high idle speed

More info here ....

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=60

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=790490

After I got the TPS adjusted for idle and I adjusted the idle speed I took a test drive.
What was of note is that with the idle fuel cut off operational I how have engine braking.
I don't think my TPS has ever told the ECU that my throttle is closed during the three years that I've been driving this Van.

The engine brake function is very noticeable, previously the fuel was always supplied at idle position.

Anyway, I stoped at Dunkin for a coffee..... the Van was looking smart in the lot.
