When I was a young chap a friend of my dad got us into a WWII museum after hours and I got to crawl all over a real unrestored Kubelwagen.

When I was 19, wow, 40 years ago, my boss had a 1942 Schwimmwagen.
At a company picnic, he drove me and probably every one else, out into Lake Allatoona, over a small island and back across to shore. I was so impressed and excited. I’ll never forget it.
I have a picture somewhere, but it’s analog still.

our shop did the initial paint preservation on Lind's schulwagen.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764975

it didn't have any logos or special inside bits yet, so it basically just looked like any other bus at the time. kinda funny in retrospect Smile

My friend and His dad were WWII recreation enthusiasts, they were Nazi impersonators, they owned a 4o something Kubel, I rode in it. Gear box was noisy as hell, but it drove, Second rarest car I encountered was in Fresno, and old lady driving a two front end bug (Hebmueller) I think Blue Nelson bought it from her,

I've come across a few pre 66 Buses but this one looked to be a survivor. (edited)

I've seen pictures of these two but finally saw them in person in 2022. Probably not that rare but they were for me.

You're right. I grabbed the wrong pic. Here's the one I was referring to.

when I visited wolfsburg in 1980 there wasn't a museum but I was allowed to join a group who were getting a factory tour before collecting their new golfs. I had to cajole the guide to let me see 'the old cars' as 'nobody was interested in them now'. he took me to a locked store room and gave me 10 minutes to look around. the cars were crammed in but I remember peering inside the millionth car, the vw38, kdf cabrio and the 1955 ea fwd prototype. I think the floor was black/white like in the old factory photos.

I have only ever seen one type 3 Ghia in person in my entire life! That was 35 years ago and it was still being driven but rusted beyond reasonable repair. At first glance I though it was an early Corvair.

An acquaintance has a 1947 split brought over after WW2. It is olive drab underneath a layer or several of white house paint. I would love to do an archeological dig through the house paint! The body and pans are in absolutely amazing condition. He knows if I were ever to win one of these stupid huge lotteries that I'd be by with a suitcase of cash!

Nice, and thanks for the invite! I've got my eye on this local Fasty and a local convertible Bug that the owners don't know that they want to sell to me....yet.
