Um, its come full circle now.
Also I was playing with an end game of what Id like to see the 64 looking like some day. I bought some 356 rims as well to aid in the Rally/Tourister look.
Back to its OG paint color with a mechanical sunroof install. Top roof painted in black with ruby red bottom.

Glad to see you are getting it ready to trade for the Type 34 Cabrio. Good boy. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Got these real McCoy 11/62 356 Lemmertz wheels in a trade. They have a nice rough sweaty look on them now. It will be sad when I blast and restore them with OG color.
Idea is to clad them in maybe some period Continentals or Coker knock offs.

Lots of great things about this car. One of the things that are not is the details to the motor. No bueno.
One of the things that really annoys me to no end is sloppy work especially on the motor presentation. Shit paint over old nasty, corroded paint? Come on.
The belt lid glared at me from day one. I've been waiting to wire wheel it and see want I had. Although it looks better, it is rough. I may have a better one in a box somewhere.
Coils are fun to restore and very easy to do. This one is the correct early one with a stamped BOSCH band Details.
Lots of this stuff was clearly hastily painted to be a 10 footer. Silver or black. I took this top stuff off to get going on the motor clean as well as go through it and replace as needed with better. THe distributor needs an overhaul. I already put new chokes on - but will tear down the carbs and clean anyway. Then all the nasty painted bits and bobs will get some TLC.
After this is done, Ill pull the motor, strip the silver rattle can paint off the block, maybe pull the heads and confirm a 1500s, redo all the tin - Then put together a nice cleaned propper painted motor.

I'm impressed Jason! That's a really nice color combination, a nice upgrade from your solid Pearl White versions. Sure wish we were closer. I'd love to take that one for a long drive up to Julian. I'm enjoying reading about your service & repairs. Detailed pics are always much appreciated! |

Real vs Reproduction
One of my all time favorite accessories for the T3 is gravel guards or rock/stone guards. About 12ish years ago it seems that the limited T3 market had an influx of front/rear nos Swedish ones to buy. Rear ones were kinda easy to find as they were a EMPI repop for awhile, but front ones seemed to be a Swedish thing.
The set I had nos in the box were put on my 63 notch that was sold long ago. Like the full circle ring - these have made a comeback in reproduction form.
I purchased a set of front/rear reproduction from aircooled accessories and was very pleased with the quality. They are easily spotted with their AAC stamp on them in the metal. A stamp that will tell collectors their origin.
I mention this because they did an excellent job in reproducing them. So good the average joe could not tell unless the stamp was there.
So if you are in the market for Gravel Guards - I recommend the AAC repops as they will cost you about 1/3 to 1/2 less then these real ones.

Now some of the fun stuff. Cleaning this stuff, going through it and making it nicer than it was. I was surprised at the gunk in the dizzy No bueno. Im surprised it advanced at all. Maybe it wasnt.
All I did since this all "worked" prior to tear down is pull it apart, clean off the half as paint job, put on a 3/4 ass new paint job and reassemble. All these parts were to have been restored already. If they were then that guy needs to have been fired. Most likely a quick rattle can cover up.
The Distributor and coil look the best. Most the other bits still ad a good og coating under silver paint. Like the pump and other silver bits.

Took the time to pull the motor and bring it in for a once over - old school style. :2gunfire:
Whatever that means
Pulling off the layers of bad. Crusty, half ass stuff. Check out those heat exchangers. The time was take to close them off instead of sourcing bellows on the inside body to work with this type. A later system could of been made to dump the hot air wen not in use. Good thing I have some proper ones.
Pulling the tin off its good to see its correct cross over 63-64 tin with the additional flaps to the sides added. I was also pleased to see the thermostat and flap hooked up and all the bits there.
As you can see the case was sprayed with shinny paint. It will all come off easily with Acetone.
All the tin and bits and pieces will be subject to replacement if Im hording better. I know I have a better fan shroud for sure.
Feels good to pull a T3 apart - haven't lost it boys
Nice drive back to the garage.
