======================
The Type 3 Rally is back for 2017!
Tom’s idea this time is to base the rally in Big Sur — this time we won’t just be driving there, we’ll be staying there! We’ll start at the Borradori Garage in Cayucos on Friday, September 29 and head up scenic Highway 1 to Fernwood Resort in Big Sur, and that will be our base of operations for the weekend. Participants from the Bay Area and points north could also choose to skip the Cauycos segment and just meet the So Cal contingent at Fernwood Friday evening. The weekend will include a Saturday drive up to Monterey where we’ll do the famous 17-Mile Drive. Plans are just forming at this point so keep your eye on this thread for updates.
Fernwood Resort offers a wide range of accommodations from hotel rooms, cabins and canvas tent cabins to campsites for RVs and tent camping. Prices are fairly reasonable by Big Sur standards. There are also a lot of other options in the area, ranging from expensive resorts like the Post Ranch Inn, to historic lodges like Deetjen’s, to very affordable campsites at Pfeiffer State Park. We’ll be posting more information about accommodations and reservations in the coming weeks and months.
All Type 3s are welcome to attend — ’61–’73, stock or custom, restored cars or daily drivers. We want to see Notchbacks, Squarebacks, Fastbacks, Type 34s, SP2s and other Brazilian Type 3s, Type 3-based buggies and specials — anything Type 3! There’s no cost to participate in the event itself, just gas, food, accommodations and an entry fee for the 17-Mile Drive.
Anyone who attended the 2011 Type 3 50th anniversary celebration or the 2014 Cayucos Type 3 Rally can tell you this event is not to be missed! Hopefully we’ll see an even bigger turnout from Northern Cal and Oregon this time. No excuses, Tram — this is the one!
More info to come! _________________ 5/62 343

Woo-Hoo! Thank you for kicking this off! I was hoping there would be a Rally next year.
This is quite a bit more of a trek for those coming up from SoCal, but:
- you can't ask for a more beautiful drive than up PCH to Big Sur
- it won't be as hot as the Type 3 Invasion earlier this year
I drove it last fall and loved/relived it. That was in a late model cushy SUV, so this will be a totally different experience. I suspect the plan will evolve into a southbound return trip on the 101, rather than head down PCH, in order to make better time, but that will no doubt evolve and may splinter into a return southbound adventure.
Thanks again! |

I'd encourage everyone to make a little vacation out of it! We are thinking a "late" start on Friday, so there's plenty of time to make it to Cayucos, but if participants can casually make it up on Thursday, there's that much more time to have fun. _________________ Tom Reay

The drive up the coast is beautiful of course, and best taken slowly and with stops to savor the sounds, smells and views. Leaving later on Friday cuts that short.
Depends on who is coming and where from... the more the merrier. All else equal, I'd vote for an earlier Friday start which means a stay-over Thursday night on Morro Bay/Cayucos... not a bad intro to the adventure. |

Thanks for organizing this wonderful event again, Scott & Tom/Terri!
I'm all for driving to Cayucos on Thursday and having a few cold beers with the early-birds. Then we can get an earlier start on Friday to Big Sur before it gets dark. Driving on Highway One at dusk/night is a real challenge! Looking forward to seeing everyone there, it's always an unforgettable adventure!

My plan is to head up on Wednesday afternoon with the trailer and the truck and with Terri in her car. We will be getting what ever last minute stuff we need to take care of at Fernwood and spend the night. Then leave the truck and trailer and get back home to meet up with the early crew on Thursday.
Then head off together on the Friday drive up the coast. With stops it might take 3 hours to get there, max. Then sunset cocktails at Nepenthe's!

You should see it during the summer or a three day weekend. That's why we shoot for this time of the year for the Rallies. _________________ Tom Reay

OK, OK!
Karen and I are in. I called Fernwood and booked a cabin for two nights, Friday and Saturday. If the T34 proves unreliable next summer then we will re-assess.
Life is an adventure.

If there's an "entry fee" (what ever than means) then there is a cost to participate What's the cost and what does it cover? _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

Basically it means 17 Mile Drive is a toll road (private). |
