A friend once told me "driving an old VW is like riding a motorcycle. Drive like you are strapped to the front of it, because you are".
He drives old VW's and new motorcycles.
Good to hear things are getting better for you every day. Keep it up! _________________ nothing |

Getting ready to go camping this coming weekend in my new (to me) 88 Vanagon Westfalia! I'm much better but not close to where I want to be. I still am pretty weak in my left side and the fusion in my right foot will probably leave me with a permanent limp.
I am blessed to be alive and all of your thoughts and prayers have been a big boost to my recovery. You guys and gals are the best! |

Have you considered simply starting with a nicer bus? I don't know what your skills are, but the race is easier if you can see the finish line. If you are not a runner, don't start off doing a marathon. |

Look forward to seeing any of my Samba well-wishers and friends at the Farmington NC SEVWA show and race October 16. I hope to be camping out with a friend visiting from Scotland UK Saturday night if everything isn't rained out (will hurricane Matthew still be looping round and round by then???). Come by and say hi to the slightly lame guy in the '88 Westy! |

Thanks, I am doing better, but have hit a "wall" in recovery - apparently my back was damaged in the accident too and I have a very herniated disc in my back affecting the nerves to my left leg. I have returned to driving a bit in the local school system but I can't stand for the hours necessary for classroom work. I do go camping a bit in my 88 Westy and I'm thankful for that! |

Just a word of praise from a fellow bus lover for your admirable and impressive perseverance! Man, you took a hit and you've hit right back with all your progress. Sorry to hear about the back, but it seems you've got a strong will and spirit and the back may too mend further. Dont' know ya, but certainly proud of ya! |

This has been a tough year, but I am very thankful for where I am and for all of my friends here on the Samba and in the VW community at large - you guys are great!
Don't be afraid to drive the old things, but drive them carefully and defensively! Install 3 point belts like I did in my '67, always lock your doors when driving (strengthening the body) like I do, and don't remove original safety related parts like heavy front bumpers. Mine absorbed a bunch of the crash energy and still folded like a pretzel!
Most of all, just enjoy! |

Does locking the doors help strengthen the body? I always unlock all of the doors incase I need to make a quick exit or if someone needs to pull me out. |
