VW 1500 ‘S’ M249 Option
I decided to put this document together a while back after seeing some information posted by Scott Taylor on his fantastic VW+VW1500 blog.
My 1964 1500 'S' (C # 315 031 871, E # 0 682 209) came equipped with this option, however when I quizzed VW in Germany, they had little back ground information on what this option was.
Thus I was compelled to pull all the information together (with Scott's help) and here we have it.
I hope you enjoy it.
Overview
This document outlines the specifications and performance figures for VW 1500 ‘S’ vehicles produced during 1964 & 1965, fitted with the M249 option.
The M249 option substituted the 1500 ‘N’ flat-top pistons for the 1500 ‘S’ high-compression dome-top pistons, effectively lowering the compression from 8.5:1 to 7.8:1 and allowing the use of regular fuel.
They looked outwardly identical to the standard 1500 ‘S’ engines except for a metal plate attached to the crankcase breather stand and a letter ‘N’ stamped on the case (*1).
To avoid confusion, the standard high-compression 1500 ‘S’ engine cases were stamped ‘R’ (*2), as this chart from the VW Workshop Manual shows:
(*1)- ‘N’ stamped into VW 1500 ‘S’ M249 engines (63.5 bhp) adjacent to Engine #
(*2)- ‘R’ stamped into VW 1500 ‘S’ engines (66 bhp) adjacent to Engine #
(from 18 February 1965, Chassis # 315 124 961, Engine # 0 878 040)
Note:
A twin-carburettor engine with flat crown pistons is available for use in countries where premium fuel with an octane rating of more than 95 (Res. F1) is not available.
This engine requires fuel with a rating of at least 90 octane and has an aluminium plate with the wording
M249
90 Octane
fixed to the two front screws of the breather mounting.
Part No’s.
Engine, complete 311 100 021J

I note that the picture you post looks like it still has the "4R3" distributor.
My 64 1500S did not have any of the extra stampings in the engine number. It was an all original 1500S that the engine had never been out of.
I have the original factory documents verifying that the engine is original to the chassis. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

M249 also stands for automatic trans in the later cars.
That would explain Bert's markings. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Aaron, does your car have the N stamp next to the engine number?
No mine doesn't Scott as my car is a September 64 model. As you correcrly pointed out, the 'N' or 'R' stamping was only from February 65.
Yes VW also re-used the M249 code for automatic transmissions later in life but that's irrelevant here.
My car has the M249 alumimium tag still attached to the breather stand too. _________________ Aaron

I know that this is an old post, but I stumbled upon it while searching for some information on my car. I just bought a 1965 Notchback 1500S. The original motor has been swapped out with my gues a factory rebuilt one as the first litter is a U, but thats besides the point. What I was wondering is, I noticed while cleaning up the front apron, there was a sticker that said "90 Oktan" on it. I was wondering if this car originally came with the M249 option motor? I have not seen one of those stickers before as none of my other cars have one. If it did, how hard would it be to find one? Thanks for any information. _________________ 1 rusty low vin-ed 1967 squareback- very long restoration project

When you say "sticker", you mean metal label like in the photos above yeah?
Mine has one too. Thanks to this thread I've learnt what it means.

I'm sorry, It wasn't the 90 oktan sticker on mine, I had it confused with another car, I think my buddies 914. Mine has a sticker that says super/premium! wich would be 90 or higher though? None of my other cars have it.

Hello from Germany,
since there were certain problems with the 1500S engines, later in the sixties VW replaced broken original 54hp 1500S engine always with the/a 52 hp-version.
