The problem with the DCNF design is that when cornering hard, fuel spills out of the float bowl vent and drowns the air corrector jets. This totally wanks the fuel mixture ant two cylinders don't fire.
I made these vent stacks from .219 and .188 brass tubing silver soldered at 20°. I had to slightly enlarge the 5mm vent hole to accept the .219 tubing. I also had to slightly reduce the O.D. of the air corrector jet to clear the .188 stack. I then flared the end inside the float bowl so there is no possibility of it coming out. Lastly, I JB Welded it in place so there is no leakage or wiggle.

Nice.
I want some of those dcn's! I bet they fit in the engine compartment so much better than IDFs. |

These are actually 44DCNFs (as big as they get) and are ultra-rare. They are Berg specials and have Grose ball valves. They weigh 1108g vs IDF 1437g and are .6" shorter than IDFs. They are a bit narrower too and with the square pattern they can be fit up either way. The manifolds are pretty much a straight shot too since the float bowl is beside not between, an especially nice feature in a T3. I haven't run these yet, but I'm sure it'll take way more than a 1g turn (yeah, right! Only possible on rails or wings) to over-top this float bowl vent. _________________ --

Very nice modification! If only that was an availiable mod for everyone. You should be extremely happy with the results. Please post an update after you run them for a little bit. _________________ Street legal fiberglass rocket ship

Eric, In the Berg catalog they said their carbs were redrilled and circuited to match specific VW engine applications. Since you have the Berg 44 specials I was curious if you could see and describe any modifications they actually did. |

I was told that the 44 and 40 DCNF had progression holes that were too large and there was not way to make them smaller.
(If it is possible to modify the 44's I am interested because I still have my set after all these years)
Bergs said that 42DCNFs were the only ones that had progression holes that were small enough to modify.
I am also curious to know what size and number of progression holes they use. |

Yup. They turned out pretty sweet! Got some of these babies for them too.

Here you can see where they drilled in from the outside to drill the progression holes. You can also see the nuts they put on the mixture screws to make them easier to turn.
I don't remember how many there were before but there are 4 now.
They drilled out the air cleaner mounting holes to take 6mm hardware and cleaned them up real nice. They also removed the enrichment valves and put on these kinda home made looking covers. All in all, a real nice job. _________________ --

They Look Awesome!!!!!Here's the story on them, A So called buggy builder up here Had them hanging on the wall for a few years He know nothing about Dialing in carbs "If he can't bolt them on", out of the box and work ,He's lost I found out he actually likes the POS progressives So I swapped him two sets for those for the DCNF's And that's the rest of the story And I prefer the IDF's I'm so Glad they have a Good Home Instead of hanging on some "dipsticks" wall I really don't mean to put this guy down But he's such a BS'er mouthing off all the time and thinks dual cannons & solexes are high preformance, Selling he's crap from JC Witney to other members of our small club,I try to tell them ?? So I beet him on the Track , Madmike _________________ 'Black Ice'Drag Buggy 'Turbo'

I have a set of NOS 44DCNFs in a box around here somewhere.
Will look and see if they have 4 progression holes...
***Edit**** I just checked mine..
They DO have 4 progression holes, staggered just like yours.
The brass plugs to access them are just like yours.
In the same place, and probably made with the carb...
It would be cool to see what the things they did to those were.
After reading all about the mysteerious "Berg Specials" all these years.
With them not doing the Specials anymore, it wouldn't be copying something, right?
So far, its:
1. Bigger aircleaner mounting studs.
2. Nuts on the adjuster screws.
3. Grind the numbers off the side.
4. Choke block-off plates.
5. Ball-valve needle and seat
Are these going onto a type 3?
Won't the velocity stacks run afoul of the short aircleaner lid?
-So....-
What's the chance you could make me up/sell me a set of those vent stacks? _________________ Bus Motor Build

Mine have obviously been tampered with...drilled and filled with lead. Don't know if it was for cleaning, enlarging passages or what.

When did they quit? I had these worked about 1 1/2 years ago.

1. Yup.
2. Yup...it looks a bit home made to me but I think it'll work well. Kind of Berg Special indicator to look for when buying though.
3. Didn't happen. The "W" logo got slightly ground off when they surfaced the tops. They lightly surfaced the bottoms too.
4. Yup. But again, for looks, I think I'll shop for some stock Weber ones.
5. I did that. I got lucky and got some here in the ads.

Yup. Stacks won't fit a T3 without a saws-all but they sure are cool! I have a few Bugs too. They need to be modified to even fit the 44DCNF too.

After a while. I'm slammed right now. My wife and I are both working overtime, have 3 kids under age 10 and I'm trying to launch some of my ACVW product line sometime in March. _________________ --

So they are still doing the specials!
Clyde, or GBE?
What that set you back?

I wonder what that really means?
Interesting lead plugs...
I just got a set of IDFs back from Art Thraen, and they had obviously new, factory-style plugs put in.
Maybe the DCNF ones are easier to get/different....
I'm getting really antsy to see hwo bad the slosh issues really are.
I remember an old post by Shad Laws about how he could have an auto shut-off:
Turn into a parking space with a snappy little swing,
And the slosh would put out the fire and kill the motor...
Let's hope it's not that bad...
I remember the Bergs doing something to improve the slosh issue.
Anybody know what that was?? _________________ Bus Motor Build

GBE in Orange. It was about $405 shipped cause I needed some parts. The needle screws that have the nuts on them were bent and a couple other odds and ends. _________________ --

Bringing this one back from the dead.
I've done the bowl vent mod to a couple of these now and took pictures all along. Thought I'd put them up.
Here goes. I'm starting with 44's here. The vent hole is a little bigger, so I used two sizes of tubing. Larger one for the hole, and the next size smaller for the stack. Doing it this way there is no need to shave the air correctors down. I also get the right size drill bits for use later.
I'd say the angle were looking for here is about 135*. I keep the tubes long, then just grind them on the bench grinder until they fit right. After that I clean them up with a drill and a little emory cloth.
Next, I mock them up using some brake cleaner lids and a bit of flux on the ends.
And solder them.
Now cut them a bit shorter with a Dremel cut off wheel. We want them a little long and will trim later. Very carefully run the bits through both sides to clean out any solder on the inside. You can see what came out. Blow through it and check the seal by blowing with a finger over the other end too.
And then clean up any remaining flux that's burnt. I just used a green scrubby pad.
Then test fit and cut the bowl side a little shorter, but you still want it to be a bit long on the inside to cut later.
This ridge need to be shaved down a little. A little grinding stone on a Dremel works great.
And final test fit.
Just a little JB weld under the stack, along the sides, and around the bowl penetration. I like to use a toothpick and swirl it on to work out any air bubbles. Some tape to hold it overnight for JB to cure.
Next morning we're here. The stack is still to long, so cut it down. These particular carbs are going to be uses with rather thin air cleaners so it needed to be short enough to fit under there; for use in a Type 3, woot!
The inside will look like this. We need to trim it down with that cutoff wheel.
And finally a bit of JB applied the same way to the inside.
I put a little silver Masterseries over the inside, but it's probably not necessary. And that's it. _________________ 69 Fastback Build

Great wright up I have some 40's, 42's and 44's I am going to be modding something like this in the future.
But it is curious that for the Berg mod that they didnt grind off the stamping of the 44 dcnf from the float casting.
I had sold a set of 42's back to Dee in the mid 90's at the classics and they had all the mods described above.

One mod that hasn't been mentioned is cutting off of the pointy nubs next to the mixture screws.
When I put the carbs back together, I'll post more pictures of the modifications. They'll be the [almost] Berg specials. _________________ 69 Fastback Build
