Here we go again!
This time it’s a 5-speed for my man Brent.
Really glad to even start helping out a guy who’s styled me out so many times.
This one should be some good fun.
Some nice stuff to play with!
Looking forward to input from the wise masters here,
Went to Phoenix and picked up some stuff.

I would like to know the specs as well, gears, R&P etc.
I had a Berg 5spd built and didn't provide input as a customer to what I wanted out of gears = not very happy with the 5spd. I'm going to pull it and have 2nd - 5th replaced.

I had the opposite, we spoke about my engine, tire size, driving style and terrain.
Very happy with the end product.
A Berg 5 is a "custom" build, the customer should be involved. _________________ Glenn

Yup, sometimes I'll bolt and engine back into a Bug and see the T/O Bearing clip on the ground or just finish torqueing the heads and notice the CHT threaded hole is on the wrong side. Or worse, forget to involve myself when a tranny is built.
Hopefully some fun pics will show up on this thread. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Oh Yeah…
We got some baller shit on the bench these days.
Peloquin diff, ARP ring gear bolts:
Anybody know the correct procedure for these bolts?
ARP lube? Lock-Tite? Torque?
300M torsional input shaft:
This one’s gonna be SwEET! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Dan,
Takes a real man to be humble and admit his mistakes.
Perhaps you would be willing to share details?
Brent’s car is a street-driven convertible Ghia.
It’s going to have a big turbo motor, 2275 or 2332 or so.
Right now, we definitely have a 3.88 ring n’ pinion,
And, for now, a “super beetle” 3.78/2.06 mainshaft.
Here, we have an 091 idler for first,
But Brent has already started thinking about an aftermarket mainshaft.
3.75/2.25/1.56/1.13/.82 has been thrown out there…
But, the 3.78/2.06/1.48/1.14 1-4 is a very popular tight 4-speed box,
And we can just add our favorite 5th - say .089 to keep the fan spinning?
Too many choices!
Your real experience is very much appreciated.
If we can learn from your mistakes we can save ourselves another build! 🤪 _________________ Bus Motor Build

Since the ring n’ pinion is for sure a 3.88…
A Gleason in good shape to match the pinion.
Was looking a bit rusty from years of storage:
Turns out it just wiped off.
Managed to find the diamond Dremel bits shown me by the great Paul Guard:
Did a de-burring on the ring n’ pinion.
Stay away from the contact surfaces!
Finished up with a heavy glass-bead session.
De-burr the de-burring!

Case for this one is a “shift rib”.
Brent had it vapor-blasted.
Shot it with some epoxy primer after a good cleaning:
Hot Rod Black:
Followed by a Spellbinder from Wren House:

After a couple days’ drying the inside got scrubbed out with some Simple Green and a brush.
Then rinsed and rinsed to get all the leftover blasting grit from inside.
Big heavy billet cover arrived:
And here’s the look Brent is after for this one:
Kind of a two-tone;
No mistaking the 5-speed part. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Did you add a 2nd vent above the diff?

Steve's just trying to get me back on here and post again... lol. Bought a new house and moved, retired from the Navy (5 years ago already), new job, blah blah blah. And I have a diesel truck fascination.
I've been saving all this stuff for probably 10 years.
This is getting me going though. Ghia build will start next year.
Steve - you got some parts coming in a week or so. _________________ 69 Fastback Build
