This is a heads up for everyone who might use this type of fuel filter.
the threads caught only enough to catch and appear tight. when I tightened it it seemed to be stripped. while starting up one morning on the way to work I smelled gas. the filter was leaking like a stuck pig. i figured the plastic had to go and this one looked bullet proof. bought a metal one piece and I feel much safer. thanks for the post I read here concerning plastic fuel filters.

think about safety 1st
compatibility with the damn E10 ethanol. (avoid china plastics)
then compatibility with German 5mm lines (if still present?)
the filtering effectiveness
SAE J905 (tested) comes in the box pressure tested too.
safety.
how will does it work in a collision, steel wins hands down. no competition.
then the micro filter size, smaller is better. (wiz makes one )
then the fit. to the hoses. ?
if it falls off, with the clamps,. removed ,its no freaking good.
use clamps,
do not put 1/4" lines in the bug, and over stock nipple barbs .
its way too loose.
btw , those screw threads in there are way too course. IMO.
i like this one.
its not expensive, (why should it?)
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WIX-33031/
keep in mind 1/4" is 6.25mm it may be tight on stock lines. |

Been there, done that. Had an instant barbecue one night in my driveway. Had the fire out in about a minute or so. Lost all the rubber hoses, engine harness and ignition wires. Nothing that couldn't be repaired. _________________ Chris

I've been running a glass filter since the mid 80s with no issues. But mine does not have plastic ends like that piece of crap in your photos. _________________ Brian

I run a plastic filter right next to my carb, just gotta make sure the clamps are tight, been doing it this way for years. Those autozone glass filters with the plastic ends are junk, i removed one off a baja i purchased last year and smashed it, just to eliminate any temptation to save it. _________________ Daily driven 1972 beetle, no more 70autostick |

i use the cheapie 99 cent plastic filters. Dont even have a bard to keep them held onto the line (use use hose clamps). I keep my filter behind the firewall though so no worries. _________________ 1974 SuperBeetle Build

the less fuel parts next to
the sparking dizzy, that sparks at 6 nodes in side.
and the fuseless , coil #15 wire that love to short and burn the better.
it likes to short, then melt the the red hot wire falls and hits that silly
plastic filter, and then it melts, kills lots of bugs that way.
one way is to remove the ballast resistor or shunt it, certain coil burn up and short. and fire.
glass has no business in a fuel system. in the dark ages.
we had fire wall mounted glass fuel filters ,but in a accident they explode
and burn everthing up.
some carbs had glass float bowl windows. (lots of mazda's and others)
ever wonder why , not now? lots of dead bodies...
some plastic is weak too, if hell bent on plastic
keep it where gas squirting has some hope, like to the pavement.
be safe. please.
just because you did something unsafe for 20 years, don't make it safe.
ask a tow truck driver some time. he will tell you.
even Russian roulette is safe 5 times. , some times... but what does that matter.? |

| I had that same filter (I think I got it from CIP1?), I was messing with my carb one day and the exact same thing happened, one end came unscrewed and dumped gas out, luckily car wasnt running it just spilled what was in the filter. My friend with a 69 beetle was not so lucky, his split at engine start up and had a minor car-b-que. My father also used one he bought at a local store on his 69 GTX, guess what? Luckily it happened when the car was off. I now tell everyone I know to steer well clear of those abominations. |

I learned the lesson on those several years ago too. Mine was on a '59 Ford pickup where somebody had obviously "prepped" it for paint with the gas cap off. I thought I'd get this cool filter that I could take apart and clean as the paint plugged it up. It didn't take many times being taken apart before the threads stripped on that cheap-ass piece of pot metal crap.
It wasn't too much later I realized it was gonna take a looong time to filter all the paint out of the gas tank and maybe it might be better to pull the tank...
Ahhh, to be young and stupid again... _________________ Two wrongs don't make a right...

I'm surprised they're even still around after 25+ years. And they even added more fail points! Mine at least had one-piece ends with pot-metal fittings...

Thanks, that's at least two down. I trashed mine a long time ago.

I've run one of these..all metal though...for several years and several changes with no problems or leaks. Everything doesnt have to be axel-nut tight. Sorry to hear about the bad luck of others though. _________________ 1971 Superbeetle
