|
|
Hello all, looking for some rear disc brake insight.
I'm getting ready to setup the rear of my 67 bus with the Bus Boys straight axle kit using long axles. Based on the fact that Bus Boys recommends using 68 Beetle axles and bearing covers, it seems that a rear disc setup that is designed to fit a 68 Beetle would also work with this kit on a split bus.
To balance the system, I will be installing 944 disc brakes up front... so Porsche pattern rears are also a part of my search/consideration.
Anyone out there with experience on this topic...??? _________________ - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I used a '72 and installed a kit that fit just fine. Make sure you get the kit with emergency brakes included. Of course a duel M/C too. |

I have 944NA rears on my swing axle. there nice, work good. But if I were to do it again I would just buy a kit from CB, or CIP1 or some one. I also have the 944 master w/o the booster. |

since you will be using 68 long spline long axle(same spline length as normal 4 lug), the 944 rear brakes are a direct bolt on with some simple e-brake modifications...

Sorry to hyjack... but I'm looking in doing the 944NA conversion on a short axled gearbox (oval window beetle). I testfitted last weekend and found out this is not a direct bolt on. Any idea what is needed to make this work??
Thanks!

you have to deepen the bearing bore in the backing plate. if you decide to do it i can measure mine and give you the dim. |

I already have discs on the front of my 61 panel (babystangs)... I'm now looking to put discs on the rear. I have a straight axle with a 68 beetle transmission and type 3 wide 5 drums. Will a regular wide 5 beetle rear disc kit fit without modification? I am running 15" radar wheels... _________________ 61 DD Panel |

Bringing up this old topic again...
I'm running babystang discs on the front of my 61 bus, and currently have type3 drums in the rear. I'm looking for a wide five rear disc (with emergency brake). Will a wide five beetle setup bolt right on? Give adequate braking?
I'm also thinking I'd install the creative engineering dual remote booster... _________________ 61 DD Panel |

I'm running that kit (EMPI) from wagenswest. I'm using long axle / short spline ('67). I needed to make some little spacers out of 3/8" tubing over 1/4" tubing (or 1/2" over 3/8"???)... as the e-brake sheathing wasn't long enough. I put the created plastic spacer at the front, where the cable goes into the body... near the front of the wheel. The carved 1/2" steel spacers Nate makes don't work with this kit. The metal spacers are for stock backing plates, I think. I had some of the custom e-brake cables... I think they were for a later year... because they didn't work & I had to trim the end & install a crimp.
Here's the tubing I used:
Here's where it went (sorry pic is rotated clockwise 90 deg too far):
Here's crimp & ferrule installed where cable too long:

Looks like the wagenswest kit is only for porsche bolt pattern... I need a wide 5 setup. What does wagenswest do to make this empi kit work??? _________________ 61 DD Panel |

I contacted him about that issue. He said that they could be adapted to wide 5 adding 1/2" track to each side.

Nate put together a empi kit for me that is wide 5 (no adapter plates), however, on test fit, I have extra spline protruding out past the rotor?!? Looks like I need a spacer between the rotor and the axle nut?
easy e - did you have any issues like this? And looks like the issue with the emergency brake cable length is fixed. There are metal spacers (maybe 2.5") to go between the body and the standard cable covering that goes to the caliper...

I know this is a little late for the question above but I'll post it for future questions from people stopping by. They make spacers for this exact application. It's made for early drums on long axles.
