|
|
Hi there! My name is Michael, I´m 20 years old and lives in Sweden.
Since september 2012 I´m fixing a rusty and lumpy split window beetle, with the chassis dated to may 1950, and the body dated to june 1951. I don´t know anything about the car´s previous history, but I think that it could be an old rally car. Well, here you got som pictures of my process with it I am producing the most of the metal parts by my own. The only bought parts are the channels, lower door hinge metal and an used floorpan for cutting.
Enjoy!
The picture in the advert. The asked price was 3500 SEK, about 543 USD and "the car" was located only seven miles from my home. My first split beetle, I was very happy!
At home. Parts included: Hand brake leaver, crotchcoolers and a very battled door on the right side. That was it!
A very rusty, but quite complete 51 body was bought in october as a donor.
Door from the donor 51 was fixed. With dents from the welding, fits my car well!
The original 1950 chassis vs 1967 one
Big cut
Floor from 1967. Better than nothing at all! Gerson ones are hard to buy.
Floorpan completed!
My daily driver, -58 bug
After about five months, the rust was done!
Mock up
2nd "donor car", a 1950 beetle blown in the 80´s behind a farm in the outskirts of myn town. Digged up from the waterfilled bombhole..
Split torsions
A lot of parts to the rear axle came from an oval rear axle that my friend had just to keep his barndoor kombi rolling in his garage. Perfect with 40 mm wide drums.
The filler on the table belongs to the guy that I´m renting the garage of. Not to my car
The wheels I´m going to use. 16 inch stock. I´m going to wide the rear ones.
3rd donor car. This was bought just for the 1500 gearbox and it´s 12v parts. 1967. A friend at work had this one behind his girlfriend's parents' barn.
Home made brackets for the chair. The folding of the metal was done by a company, the rest by me.
Hä dugä *Means it will do, in local Swedish of the state of southern Dalarna (the southern valleys).
I´m using as much "correct" parts that I can on visible spots, such as 14 mm KAMAX bolts.
The brown paint has faded (as I wanted) Working ash tray from the donor '51.
1600 cc dual port in good condition bought 25 miles from my home
Shorted 1 inch with lowering stuff
That was a short presentation of my project. Im hoping to drive the car to Hessisch Oldendorf. We will see if i make it!

No, I think that the roof is beautiful and makes the car. The only I am going to fix is the frame for the windshield. It´s not that warm in Sweden that you could drive without one This will be as close as a rollig forest fint you can see on the road, with prestanda, 12v and handling of a newer beetle. A nice car for driving, with a battled body. |

I thought you were joking about restoring such a basket case. But you're actually bringing it back to life. Mycket bra. Do you live near my relatives in Ornskoldsvik? _________________ Charlie

Fair enough. It's great that the shell in such condition will become road worthy again! This split is gonna show some serious character for sure |

nice save!
will you fix the rear air vents? would be cool to see them straight and complete. the roof looks nice, if you are allowed to register it that way it's awesome. here any car with even small surface rust fails the inspection from start. _________________ 1960 1200 model 117 deluxe ragtop

Wow! What a project, fantastic progress!! I love the paint/patina/dents and I'd leave the roof and louvers as they are. As long as all of the structural rust is taken car of...
Make sure when you are done you paste a pic of the huge smile on your face when you drive it the first time!!
Thanks for sharing all of the pics... _________________ John Henry

Can't get enough of the "battled" look. Talk about Serious rolling character? you've got it all right there (at no added expense)
Like John said, concentrate on the solidity/roadworthiness...and let the distractions melt away like spring snow.
Great project, Best luck and keep posting progress!
