Here's a comparison of the 58-ish (immediately post-crankstart apron) to 61(?) rear apron (bottom)--versus the 61(?)-65 apron (on the top).
Notice the different width of the space that goes around the engine.
I can only presume this is due to the 36hp and maybe bastard 40hp being shorter than the later 40hp. The blue decklid is the original to my 6/59 built Westfalia.
The early style (bottom) will not work with a later engine, because the space is too big. It will bolt in, but the apron will ride over top of the rear engine tin.
