God Luciano, are you a solicitor?! You can string a sentence together better than me anyway! respect due!
Anyway, I think this thread is getting to be a real racist rant, given that no-one has been able to actually confirm who wrote the said caption, and from what country they originate. As I said before, find out who wrote it then take them to task.
but you're still on the money with Volksworld, thats the kind of thing they need to check before it goes out to the printers. The buck has to stop with someone - and its normally the guy at the top!
OK, so back to the Barndoor - I can't wait to have a look at it once its here in the UK. I've actually come across retro a few times (not in the biblical sense!) and always found him to be a decent sorta fella, but hey, EVERYONE falls out with people now and then, look at me, it sounds like I dislike Trayle, when in actual fact I've never met the guy - hes probably 99% the same as me and we'll get along great when we actually meet. Thats right Trayle, sorry for telling you to shut up! Just got pissed about the Irish thing thats all - I have close relatives in the armed forces who are still f*cked up about things they saw in NI.
OK, now lets play nice.
Again, sorry for ranting at you trayle. (you know how I posted about my spelling? Its just taken me 4 attempts to spell your name right!!).

so he bought it to flip it. he paid a bit more in £ that he claimed he paid in $.
It is funny as I spoke to Steve yesterday and these are not the amounts we have talked about. I won't mention it here as I'd rather not throw another number in the air. So far no one can tell for sure what he paid apart from the man himself. In addition I doubt it is our business to question him about the amount, (despite the fact that I asked him yesterday and he was kind enough to answer me). In addition I doubt he will sell it, unless he gets a silly offer for it |

So so far we have someone who has heard something (Johnny at the Volksworld show?) and apparently it is in print that he has said that he "ripped it out from under the yanks". Would that be in his column? Not seen it yet. As I said Steve told me an amount yesterday and I cannot even be sure he told me the thruth about that . I love this, it all starts from Johnny showing genuine interest to ask about what bus it is. Turns into Brits/Yanks exchanges of comments over Northern Irland etc. In the meantime Steve can't even log untill later tonight. |

hello boys (and girls).......
ok , first things first, or rather what seems to piss you off the most.....
the "snatched from under the noses of the yanks..or whatever it says in my volksworld column"
belive it or not.... that text has absolutely nothing to do with me , and was added editorialy to accompany the pictures and vw bores text i submitted... one of me pressing a notch door panel(to highlight the absurdity of some enthusiasts and the extremes to which they go .and bore the shit out of others)
the other pic being of the 23 deluxe you are all wondering about.....
now to be honest i feel the statement to be a little crass.... but as i said i have no control to the final edit or any additions to my submitted work....
may sound like a cop out .and if thats what you think fair enough..... if you knew me then you would know if i was saying stuff like this i would have come on here and said yeah i said that and i mean it too..facts are i didnt .but in some ways maybe i did buy it from under some of you guys noses......(can you be so sure a capture from europe wouldnt be worded in a similar way in a us vw mag??? )
before i get onto the subject of busses.. i also would like to point out to bus racer who so kindly called me a wanker (well if you got the equipment i guess its ok to get it out to remind yourself how lucky you are :D and belive me i am fucking lucky )
and why am i a wanker.?..because you (bus racer) belive i have some anti usa vibe running through my column..... get real....where is that coming from??
i described the most tediously boring vw related thing i ever heard....it could have been said by any vw person.from any country in the world..and just because he is a countryman of yours it makes me anti usa??..... so maybe just to keep bus racer happy i should have related another story.. perhaps about a german person ??.....
but then surely the german equivilent of busracer or herr rennbulli ;) would call me a wanker thinking i was anti germany....PLEASE GET REAL
(just out of interest what bus do you race? and how quick is it..cos i race a bus too.perhaps i am copying you or trying to make you look a dick ???....)
ok back to the real reason we are here.....
53 deluxe...
when i met gibbs and mr mafia at sandown i never mentioned $10,000 if i paid that i think i would have every right to say i stole it from under your noses..... i paid well over double that amount..well over...(and the exchange rate was crappy at that time as well) it took nearly a month of hard talking and pain in the ass calls etc to complete the deal, and at no point untill i sent the money was i sure of getting my dream bus.......
yes dream bus,at the moment it still isnt here.and belive me when it arrives i will be happier than most of you will appreciate ... sad to say apart from my wife my world is vw busses,i race em,drive em build em and sell em.... talk shit about them and generally would rather have a bus in my life and live on the streets than no bus at all!!if that makes me trippy.im not about to change!
the bus was brett barberies.... i did buy it through danny last november/december.....i was told of other interested parties in the bus..and all i could do was wait and hope it would go through ...obviously it did and i am stoked ......(motor and trim etc are all with it )
all the speculation on here doesnt really suprise me that much, after all no one gossips like a vw person  but in some cases its hard to see where the opinions come from !
now heres the dielemma.... i would normally have slammed the 53, dropped a 200hp motor and a decent box into the thing, shoved some burners on it and raced the crap out of it..... thing is i appreciate what this bus is...and all the reasons why i shouldnt do that.so stock it will stay
and if this makes me a wanker.then a wanker i will be forever ;)
anyway i still have my 62 23 to race ricers in :D
if you want any more info mail me.... and if you want your say or anything putting in my column for volksworld get in touch.....

a quote from steves article...."Anyway,myself and a few othes watched the closing ceremonies(bad camberg) and were amazed to hear a well known American Karmann Ghia aficianado talking very loudly and in great depth about the amount of 'cush' (yes you read it correctly) in some restored Karmann Ghia interior door -trim panels. For everyone else on the planet,he was referring to the amount of give and deflection in the materials used compared with the original materials. He was stating that his reproduction panels had precicly the correct amount of 'cush',precicely the correct amount!
As a work of comic genius,it would have taken a lot of beating. But,this was a totally serious comment about a classic car part, and to me it was dumfounding."
the gist of the whole article is how boring it is for some people to take their hobby,or means of making a living seriously. how utterly ridiculous it should be that anyone would memorize part numbers or any other small facts regarding part changes etc. i myself am not one of those people but do appreciate the people out there that are walking talking information bases. i feel lucky enough to know some of these people and to be able to get ,what seems to me, important information.
wether mr ghia guy was being boastful, rude or just a plain tool about his parts i really dont know. there are ,im sure a lot of jackasses ou tthere making good parts. which is the point. i dont care how much of a jackass you are if your making good parts. for years you couldnt get decent upholstery material. the thickness and grades colors and texture just werent there. we're lucky enough ,in the past several years .to have gotten some materials that are close to factory grades. i cant recall how many ghia interiors,on nicely otherwise restored cars, looked like overstuffed bedroom quilts. on many other cars for that matter also. and what about bus interiors?? how many of those look like overstuffed lounge chairs?? yeah i guess its not important and just downright stupid. same goes for reproduction sheetmetal. i guess its foolish of me to be conerned with the fit of aftermarket doglegs, rocker panels,or any other much needed replacement parts. how boring.
Why was it necessary to quote the ghia guy as "well known American Karmann Ghia afficianado" ???? does it matter if hes german, scottish, italian or any other nationality.
Steve you must see that that line coupled with the deluxe caption certainly does come off as being anti american.
i really couldnt care less where a lot of buses go...as long as were not turning nice original ambulances and fire trucks into gross ghetto deluxes!
i really couldnt care less how much you paid for your bus. i am pleased to hear that your not going to modify it however as it appears to be much too nice for that.
as far as what buse i race hers afew pics to follow. rob |

heres one of my old racers. 1776 dual webers. raced that thing down to cabo from 9,000 ft above sea level in colorado. sustained 70-80 mph for hundreds of miles in the baja desert. capable of 100mph. all in 80-100 degree heat. 5,000 mile trip without a single mechanical glitch. did nearly 2,000 miles without ever shutting the safaris. not once! wher is it now?? in the land of the rising sun.

Trayle, just lay off OK? I was under the impression that we were all on here because of a common love of Volkswagens. Any idiot can spout of shit done in the name of King and country that's wrong, I'm sure if I thought long and hard enough I could point a finger at you for soemthing done years before your birth, but who cares? No-one. I aren't here to abuse anyones country, because I've got a lot of respect for nearly all the guys on here, no matter where they're from. plus I've got no problem with any other country because I aren't racist.
Hey, Trayle was right, saying that Ireland shit really does get people going eh? I wonder why - Has it ever occurred to you Trayle that people's lives have been lost over this? Thats right dickhead, REAL PEOPLE. Anyway, Guys, lets try to get on, and Trayle - shut the fuck up OK?
LOL... You can be serious. It was 1997 when that magazine was written. I couldnt care less who wrote it. I couldnt care less if anyone apologises for it. "Lay off"? I simply told a story about that article and gave my opinion of whether or not anyone would ever own up to it... The Ireland parts was a JOKE, and meant to make you understand the way a phrase that means nothing here in the States can be missunderstood as being offenive. You have proven my point.
For the record Stephan S. is a great guy. I have had him over to my pad and showed him my shop. Ivan(from Volksworld) and I have had polite conversation over the years, and I have nothing but respect for him. And also there are GFK member from the UK that I think are great. But at the same time I have been reading VZI for years and it is my opinion that "alot" of Britts, not all, have a superiority complex. Alot of britts think that they have cornered the market of IRONY and HUMOR. And that the rest of us are benieth them.... And as a matter of fact if you asked most Britts they would say the same thing about alot of thier country men. |

Back to the bus for a moment....correct me if I'm wrong....wasn't Brett's 53, Tom Brouillette's from the east coast, with the wrong drivers panel, incorrect vents, not the rusty Texas bus Jeff Keller had.
Brett's bus was mentioned several times over the OCTO/ Porsche & VW Toy and literature weekend. Seemed to me at that time the local So Cal bus heavies were doing their best to keep it the states. However, word has been for sometime now that MR Z was pulling the strings for Brett. Too bad for Brett in my opinion. |
