Damage shows why VW implemented safety changes (nudged by US regs):

The collapsible column was designed to prevent the column from coming into the passenger compartment if the front collapsed in a crash. It was retained and collapses by the reinforced firewall. Your body isn't going to collapse the column. The dished steering wheel was designed to bend and collapse much more easily if you hit it and/or the column started to protrude into the passenger compartment and the column was shorter so less column to protrude straight at your head and chest.

All told, the front beam could be crushed a little less than a foot before it would start to protrude into the cabin. The steering wheel would collapse another 10 inches or so. So your safety margin improved by a little less than two feet of structural collapse of the front beam as opposed to the flat wheel with non collapsible column. After that, you are going to have a bad day. Plenty of vintage crash photos of the later cars with the dished wheel bent all to hell and several inches or more of exposed column in the cabin. A great improvement over the old wheel and solid column.

All of this assumes you had three point seat belts on. Without belts, you are going to hit the wheel, so how much give of the wheel, and the reduction of the force of the column coming toward you from the impact made the collapsible column a pretty big improvement over the dished wheel by itself.

None of these pictures show a car with the collapsible column which would have prevented most of the exposed column visible in these pictures.
