I have Bus Depot's E-Z Awning on order and they just called to tell me it will be on back order for another few weeks. They offered to discount it if I want to wait, or sell me one that is 3ft longer for a few extra $$$.
Would any of you go for the longer one? Might it be too big? I've never seen one in person, but I'm thinking the larger one might be nicer to cover picnic tables etc and shelter more people. The only con I can think of might be the extra windage.
I will call them tomorrow but wanted to get some of the forum's opinions. Thoughts?
BTW I'm completely happy with their customer service. The other items I ordered arrived exactly when they said they would and their follow up phone calls and emails surpasses other online vendors I've dealt with. Thanks Bus Depot!

I have this awning and while I haven't used it in the field yet, I did set it up at home and it is quite large. Personally I would not get the extra 3 feet as I feel the standard size is already on the large side (you can see it in the pics). It's not perfect but it's also not to bad either. Here it is on my van at home. It's a little askew in the second picture due to the curb being higher. Also, I set it up using the optional kit that allows you to put it in the jack holes, but it's not very stable in that configuration.

Thanks Kevin. Your pics are helpful.
What a tough decision! If wait for the smaller one the summer will be over by the time I get it. Or I can get the larger one now and deal with it...

Well, BusDepot says the new awning is wider than the original and runs nearly the length of the bus. (8x12 vs 8x8) Setup is supposedly the same, so I'm going to go for it!

I'm too cheap. This is my awning:

$15 ground sheet, two spring clips and a couple of hand-hewn poles that later turned into firewood.

Cheers!

Yes I did an awning search last night and bough the Kelty-Carport-Med.
After looking Backcountrymedic LARGE carport that this is too big for beach day trips. The large takes up more that one parking space next to you. That would be good for camping but I would be using it mostly on day trips. Can't beat the price for a good fold up shade.More later.

I picked up the medium Kelty Carport at STP's store in Cheyenne, WY last July, and it is very simple and effective.

Camping in N. Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago, we had two very wet days. The carport provided enough space to use two coolers as tables for my ancient Svea-Sigg stoves to cook upon. Sitting on a little tripod stool under the carport in the rain was actually fun.

On the downside, the beverage supply goes quickly on rainy days.

Cheers,
Ric

Sierra Trading Post also had Hummer accessories this time last year and we bought their awning/2 chairs/table set for about $80 that works great for the price and stows easily in separate stuff sacks. I have not checked lately to see if they are still on closeout, but it's worth a look. The grey color matches our Westy perfectly and the "HUMMER" logotype on the stuff makes us look much cooler than we really are.

Jeez, down to 1/2 of what we paid. Can't beat that!

Riceye thanks for the report.I looked All over the net and thought that for price and size this is a great deal.Go to a RV site and see how much the real awnings go for. Yeah I saw the Hummer and thought it was a lil smaller that the Kelty.

Thanks Glenn

I just bought one of the cheap Hummer awnings. If the chairs are no good, I'll just sell em and keep the table and awning. Heck, that'll make it even cheaper. I could live without the "Hummer" label, too, but at that price.....

If you hate the logo you can always just write over the H with a big B. That's what we say every time we see one of those rolling jokes on the road.

I'm not making this up. When gas prices started their as-yet-uninterrupted meteoric rise a few years ago, every time my wife or I would see one on the road, we'd yell "BUM-MER!!" at the stupid sucker driving that gas sponge around. No reason to quit now.
