I did a search for production numbers but did not get the answer I'm looking for. I'm curious how many seamed gate double cabs were made in 59. Can someone point me to a thread or site that has these figures? |

I am going to walk the plank here and say all 59 model year dc's were seamed gate trucks. I have seen trucks produced in April of 1960 with regular side gates. Early double cabs are still a mystery. |

My M-plate shows that my DC was made December 18, 1959. It is seamed roof and gate and has a 6 fuse holder. I'd like to know how many DC's were made in 59. As stated earlier, I assume that all 59's were seamed. |

I am going to guess maybe one hundred trucks by VW in 58.My dc was made October 1958,belly pans, seamed roof, and gates.Another early truck I own is Sept of 59 produced, only has seamed gates. How many produced, who knows?? How many still exist, again who knows? |

So according to those statistics, 24465 pickups were built. Any guess as to the SC/DC ratio? |

I'm guessing less than 10% were based on those numbers. SO maybe 1200-1500 dcs?
Just found something neat out about my DC. It has M207, it was shipped with tilt and bows. Neat! |

So I did some math. Comparing the SC production numbers from 57 and 58, I figured a rounded 17% growth rate. So projected growth for 59 would be an additional 1,126 more SCs produced in 59 at a 17% growth rate. My estimate of production is 20,268 SCs and 4197 DC's. |

One thing you have to keep in mind. the October thru December 58 dcs were hand built more so than the 59 produced trucks.Your math is a good estimate for 59,however who knows if those figures are correct that you base your figures on? It would be nice to know though. |

If they were hand built in 58 and in 59 the production was faster and more streamlined, then more SCs would have been built. So I think it is safe to say that the number of DCs built in 59<4197. Now we all have at least an idea of how few were produced. The question is how many of the 4197 are still around. I saw that only 15 were registered on vintagebus' registry. |

I was also wondering the same thing, I have a 59 that I am starting to repair, years of rust and abuse. The M plate was replaced with an incorrect plate from an early DD Kombi with ambulance option,I am wanting to do the birth cert to find out what mine was equiped with. _________________ 1960 Slamma Jamma SC

This is the forty six dollar question for any model of bus.
I was trying to determine this for 15 window buses some years ago, but the methodology will be the same for pretty much any model.
My thinking is that a higher percentage of de Luxes and Standards survived compared to Commercials. Reason being that they were more "valuable" all through their lives, whereas many commecials were driven to death.
The number of 15 window buses KNOWN to exist is something less than one per cent of production if I recall.
Lind pointed out that for every one known, there are ten that are unknown.
That means (if you accept the reasoning) that there are about ten percent of any model survived.
I contend that the number of commercials may be somewhat less than ten percent at as many of them simply wore out and were crushed before they reached old age.
The early DC would fall into that category as they would have been used as work trucks.
Personally, I think somewhere between five and seven per cent of 59 DC's are still alive??
That would put the number around 220, which seems a little high to me.
I realize that this is a WAG, and would like to hear other theories about how many buses survived.. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

That's a pretty good estimate but yeah I think 220 is high. Mine is the only 59 out of the 8 that I know of here in Utah. |

My truck was built in 11/58 and spent most of it's life in Salt Lake City also! I was told a fire chief owned it. It's now being restored in Florida _________________ 59' Double Cab |

Yes, but you gentlemen are in FL. I am speaking currently in Utah. Mine was pulled out of an orchard in CA.
I think it would be interesting to see how many are actually around. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |
