| check this out cats, when i got my beetle, the engine oil was too the brim, cranked it once and it shot shit everywhere, but anyway, i changed the screen and the oil and gasket, well, its warming up, and i didnt really run it much all winter, so i just changed the oil again and it still smells like gas, the oil level was fine before i emptied it though, did check that. i also adjusted the valves while i was into it, do you guys think the engine is still mixing the gas in with the oil, or just a residue from where it was previously? my belief is that someone didnt know where to gas it and the tube is big and was possibly mistaken for a fuel cap... post back soon, i want to get oil in it before the day is out, if possible |

My belief is that your fuel pump diaphragm is bad, and letting gas get into the crankcase. This is bad. Very bad. Very, VERY bad. Don't drive it at all until you fix it. Not only will it thin the oil to the point that you may wipe out the bearings, it could also start a pretty nasty fire. |

| I agree it will wipe out the bearings but I have personally never heard of it, or seen it causing a fire. |

The above posts might be true and are worth a check. I had the same problem... gas in crank... and it turned out to be a bad piston and rings allowing blow by.
In any case its very bad on the entire engine system and needs to be dealt with asap.
good luck |

| I had a Super Beetle that did this when the ignition coil was weak and it wasn't burning it's fuel completely. |

| well, like i said, it was filled to the brim of the oil reservoir, and chances are there were gas residues left over, leaving the scent of gas, there didnt appear to be as much of a mixture this time, and i checked the oil before i loosed it, there didnt appear to be any addition of gasoline by comparison to what i originally put in it like 3 months ago....is there a possibility that is not a big problem?lol, anyway, how do i check the fuel filter diaphragm? and is it possible to replace just that or do i need to replace the whole fuel pump? |

let me guess you have one of those golden colored "new style" fuel pumps??
(IMO) do you self a favor and get an "old style" rebuildable type...
i put one on my 65 bus as a TEMP "have to" replacement (brand new brosol) and same thing happened (good thing i am a nut when it comes to checking the oil)
asked around and found several others to have had the same thing happen....
Dropped the oil/gas....replaced (points and etc while i was there)ran it for a couple trips to town , droppeed oil again and she was just fine for many many miles of great driving....
be careful cause as others have said this kindas thing is BAD NEWS if you ignore it! |

Gas in oil = time bomb.
A buddy of mine was tearing down his engine that had been underwater at one time. Besides his oil being more gas than oil, it contianed: acorns, leaves, a drywall screw, and river sludge. And he had that thing running!
But yeah....gas in oil = bad |
