Am just returning to VW dubs after a 20 year hiatus. How does one install an electronic tachometer to VWee without running a wire all the way to the back? Have a 79 westy and too many wires under the dash to figure out which one up front might give me a signal. I know this is probably a really stupid question yet when I search for a thread I get hundreds of hits.
Thanks much, Mark

I have never found one. Always had to run a wire to the rear.

Yeap, must run a wire. I suggest getting a strip of 4 wires together from a car supply store for a trailer harness. They usually have a roll of it, and they'll charge you by the foot.

Then, wire that 4 wire pack back to the engine compartment. Now, you'll all the wires you'll need to run: tach, oil temp, oil pressure, plus one more gauge.

My question is in the same line, in my 71 type2 I changed out the guages for a set from a 72/914.All the guages work fine with all the bells and whistles working as they should, then after a time 1yr or there bouts the tach needle started bouncing around when I go through the gears, though nice and steady at idle. Went to the VDO site tech support and did the in line 1N4005 Diode thing and that made it worse. Checked the connects, wires guage to coil looks good w/ direct switched 12v from fuse holder and private ground. Will settle down after driving for a time. Help anyone? I don't know what would cause that, but my guess is either the coil or the tach itself. I would try to test those two items, and go from there.

Negative side of the coil. Same side as the points connect to.
