Has anybody bought and installed the Wolfsburg West heater boxes (heat exchangers)? Love some feedback.

Thanks
Trevor

I installed a set of these on a friend's bus a year or so ago. IIRC they're made by Dansk. The quality is "so-so" - they are lighter than the originals because the metal is a lot thinner, and they do not have the aluminum cladding around the j-tube, so you won't get as much heat as with an original heater box.

E&B.. are the Bus Depot and WW ones from Dansk?

Based on what Thom says the WW seem thin, which isn't what I'm after.

On another note, are 1500cc beetle and bus boxes different?

Have heard of Dansk Heat Exchangers that had more material in them, but it seems they have not been made for decades.

Pre-1968 HEs are same between bus and bug.

You can access the original VW dealer bus parts manuals here:

http://www.oacdp.org/

Left click on the images to blow it up, and again to really blow it up.

As you can see all HE part numbers starting with "113". The first "1" means type 1, the "13" means deluxe bug model.

You can also compare the original VW dealer beetle parts manual thru the "Upcoming" at the top of that web page.

Both are a must to look thru now and then! Smile

Forgot to mention that all repro HEs sold today in any VW parts supply shop are Dansk and as far as we have seen the lesser quality ones. Sad

If anyone can find a present day new source of the repro HEs (other than the few dusty NOS ones that pop up every few years) with the ribbing inside the exhaust tube, would be very interested.

As far as I know, some of the repro HEs do have the ribbing and the aluminium core around the exhaust tube. But they only have 4 instead of 8 ribs, so they don't work that efficient as originals. The CSP ones should have those, and thought the dansk ones too.

Yes, but that is not INSIDE the exhaust pipe, those are on the OUTSIDE.

ups, sorry for that. Correct reading is still difficult.
Never heared of ribs inside the exhaust tube. Do you have a picture, that shows how that looks like?

Guess which is Dansk in the image below...

Genuine VW vs pattern-part, exhaust heat exchangers
NASkeet
If you have ever wondered why, genuine VW exhaust heat exchangers, provide more heat to the heater & demister system, than pattern-part, exhaust heat exhangers, this cut-away cross-section of some specimens, featured in the following magazine article, should make the reasons more apparent:

Jim Tyler, "The Heat is On", VW Motoring, November 1998, pages 38~41.

The most commonly available pattern-part exhaust heat exchangers, seem to be those of the Dansk Autopart A/S brand, manufactured by J. P. Group, in Denmark. Other known manufacturers are Bosal Ltd. and Arvin Replacement Products Ltd., which both have divisions in Great Britain and possibly elsewhere.

Their contact details are:

Dansk Autopart A/S (aka J. P. Group, Jopex Division), Hjulmagervej 5, DK-8800, Viborg, Denmark.

I don't think the last Dansk heater box I saw had even that much heat sink material.

Thanks for the pictures. I have to admit, I've seen these ribbed tubes before.
