After doing some research and finding very little information,I spent some time looking up all the spring clamp information using the dealer catalog. This is for the spring style hose clamp (constant tension) used on the later vanagons. These are all the sizes used on 1.9/2.1 liter.
The sizing appears to me to be the diameter the clamp will hold at mid range according to my caliper, which I assume is ideal tension.
PART NUMBER- HOSE/CLAMP SIZE(MM)- CLAMP COLOR
N0164011 19 (H2O PUMP ELBOW?) BLACK
N0164021 23 (HEATER HOSE) BLUE
N0164031 27 (COOLANT TOWER) GREEN
N0164041 32 (COOLANT TANK HOSE) BROWN
N0164101 40 (RAD.HOSE SMALL) LIGHT GREY
N0164091 47 (RAD.HOSE LARGE) GREEN
I shot a picture of them all,ill try to load it.
There are a handful of specialty pliers used on these,Im sure everyone has their favorite!
Hope this helps someone,The Samba has helped me so many times... |

Good info. I have bad luck with all the normal screw type hose clamps I get locally.
Does anyone know a supplier that sells these spring type camps in all sizes?

I have had a very rough time with those VW factory clamps. The extra tab designed for use with the special pliers limits the amount you can open them - the tab hits the other end of the clamp. All well and good with new hoses. But once a hose swells with age or exposure to oil, you may find you cannot get the clamp off the hose without a lot of swearing, knife cutting and loss of a half hour on each, plus the vehicle is disabled until you get a new hose.
I get the design, but there is a down side. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1993 Toyota LandCruiser, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

I file/grind down or bend that tab when I finally get the clamps off. Works like a charm without that tab.

That tab on the stock spring clamp is there for a reason. It keeps you from over-extending the clamp when removing thereby altering the clamping force (spring rate), and yes, you will have leaks if you alter the tab. I have nothing to back this up, other than my looking at the clamp, although it does seem to look obvious.
I too feel the surity of clamping down hard on a screw clamp, even when I know this is so-so way of doing it. And yes, they randomly leak on me, usually the 1 ½" radiator hoses. _________________ Ideology trumps Reality - no exceptions |

I’m in the process of replacing all the coolant lines on my ‘88 2.1 using this file as a reference for clamp sizes.
https://oldbluesblog.com/files/VanagonSpringClamps.pdf
The 47mm clamps are REALLY REALLY tight in the locations shown, except the radiator ports where they fit nicely. Should they maybe be the next size up?

That document is based on the VW parts catalog, and it shows 47mm clamps at those locations. Original clamp color is green. _________________ ~Kamz

Feel free to bend back <or> remove the stopper tabs on these clamps…gives you more to work with. BTDT.

A shot of silicone spray helps get clamps into position easily |
